Writers, GET OFF TWITTER!!! Pt. 2 (Yes, we’re still on this!) #Writing #Author #Advice #Twitter

Hi Jim,

I was hoping you could help me. I have a growing social media following, which I’m really happy about. My writing is getting traction and a lot of attention, and I’m hoping to be published soon!! Unfortunately, with such a huge following, comes conflicts on my wall. I try to follow and share stuff I like, but before long, really offensive things show up on my wall. I hear everything from segregation, to some people talking about something called “Praise Kek” and a certain dictator did nothing wrong, while others have made some pretty outrageous statements that I won’t repeat here, but they condemn white women and straight people pretty harshly. I’m honestly an apolitical individual and this kind of thing is abhorrent to me.

I don’t like deleting from my follows or following… I want my Twitter page to be about my writing, not about politics. I don’t know what to do.

Thanks,
Merry

Hi Merry,

This seems to be a recurrent theme of questions I get with regards to ‘reader management’ topics. This is actually kind of sad as personally, I’d rather spend my time helping people with their actual writing…

However, I’ve also long advocated for escapism and preventing politics from infiltrating every aspect of our lives, so to that end, I’ll try to help as best I can…

As I said the last time someone asked me a question regarding follower… GET OFF TWITTER!

“I want my Twitter page to be about my writing, not about politics.”

I can respect and appreciate that, but unfortunately in many cases it simply is not possible. Twitter has been well-documented as a pretty cancerous place for discord. If you take a look at my page, I simply use it as an additional offshoot wordpress. What you see here, you see there. I rarely tweet anything else. Even so, I get questions from people that I’m sure came from there asking me about the political messages of my books, my own views/values, and deeper meaning behind certain themes… and my answer is always the same, “Look, all I’m trying to do is write a good story. I had no political agenda in mind when I wrote the characters. I wrote Qira and General Xaphine to be strong characters because they needed to be strong characters. I wrote Adaline to be crippled and a damsel in distress because that is what the story I was trying to tell called for. While I did intend to criticize the church and the idea of blind faith in my first two books, there was no deeper meaning intended other than that. If you drew something more from it, that’s great! I hope it’s something positive that you can take away from it and incorporate it into your life.”

Forgive me, I’m going off on a tangent here. The best thing I can tell you to do, if you insist on having more than an absolutely minimal twitter presence, which IMHO is all that is necessary… and you want to keep it to writing and reading… Then you’re going to have to spend time really scrutinizing the people you follow. How do you do that? Well…

Quite simply look at their profile. Look for certain terms…
“Social Justice”
“Trump2020”
“DontTreadOnMe”
“They/Them-Gender fluid, He/Him, She/Her” (or other preferred pronouns/identity confirmation)
“Anti (pretty much anything)”
Political Leanings
“Ally”
“Anything Kek of Pepe”
“resist”

A good writer profile or someone who’s just looking for new reads and interesting people are going to keep their profiles simple. They’re going to tell you who they are, their occupation, maybe a hobby, and what they do. The profiles that spend more time talking about what they believe, or put more of a focus on their identity, are ones to avoid if you’re looking to steer clear of socio-political discourse. These ones are almost guaranteed to flood your all with insane amounts of politics.

Finally, and I know this one is going to hurt, you should avoid following celebrities. I know the temptation to see what’s going on with them or find out if they’re doing a guest even in your area, but trust me, they pontificate worse than anyone else I’ve ever seen.

Some of the worst offenders I’ve had to delete have been…

Patricia Heaton – She posts a lot of right-leaning and at times, Christian fundamentalist posts that… frankly creases me something terrible.

Stephen King – This guy was more tolerable before he was sober. I hate to say that because he’s extremely talented, I love his stories and… his movie Maximum Overdrive is one of the greatest pieces of 80s cheese to grace the big screen! Unfortunately, the identitarian and hyper partisan stuff he posts just goes beyond my tolerance level.

Tim Allen – I admit I love the tool man, but he’s got one hell of a victimhood narrative going and he let’s it be known pretty much every day that he actually posts. He seems like a nice guy, but… you can’t really do much if your ideological beliefs don’t mesh with your work environment. You’re better suited to fly under the radar.

Mark Hamill – Full disclosure, I love Mark Hamill. If I met him in person, he strikes me as the kind of guy who likes getting big bear hugs from his fans… maybe. However, I’d have a big smile I’d shake his hand and tell him how much his work has impacted my life. Everything from Star Wars to Batman the Animated Series, to several other great works of his.
Sadly… he has one of the WORST cases of Trump derangement syndrome I’ve ever seen. I don’t like using that term because it denotes a political leaning, but with Hamill… literally his Twitter feed is around 99% Anti-Trump rhetoric, much of it fake, much of it simply insanely one-sided, some of it even incoherent. It was so bad that I had to cease following him and I was not happy about it. I don’t care who likes or hates Trump, right or left, but do we need to hear about it every moment of every day?

Thank you for the question. I really hope this helps! Please feel free to leave me a comment below to let me know what you think? Do you use twitter? How much or little? Does what shows up on your wall affect you or do you even care?

ETERNAL FLAME!!!

Oh man, this is a band that you can listen to and get a complete story out of that. They’re kind of a leftover group from the 80s, not that they themselves are from the 80s, but their style is just that.

When to Listen: When heroism is realized. As the hero reaches his height. That is the best place for this song.

So to be honest, writing isn’t the only thing I do. Aside from writing stories, I’m also a guitar player, IT/IS whiz (professionally speaking), father of three, trivia jockey, amateur historian, and artist.

(You should see my resume!)

I tell a lot of writers not to work on their stories when they’re stressed out or agitated. Usually the result isn’t all that great. So with that in mind, I wanted to showcase what I do when I’m too stressed out or agitated to write in the hopes of giving people some inspiration for finding their own coping mechanisms.

The first piece, featured above, is a comparison from the first piece I did that I was never really happy with and the remake below which I did with higher quality markers… and when I say higher quality, I mean the difference between $20 per pack to $90 per pack (and that was on clearance!!!)

This is arguably my favorite. Ahsoka Tano as a scrappy street fighter. Enjoy!!!

Wish I knew why they were gone. The world needs laughter!

Ahem… Edguy hits another one out of the park. Off of their Mandrake Album, All the Clowns is a lighthearted song. If you like Iron Maiden, but wish that there were more songs they did that were lighthearted… some of Edguy’s stuff might be for you.

When to listen: Well definitely general playlist, but also this is an upbeat song. So I’d say you could get away with using it at the end of your story if you’re giving it a happy ending.

It’s rare that I do two from the same band in a row, but I really do love this band. This one from Edguy’s ‘Age of the Joker’ album exemplifies the best Tobias Sammet has to offer. Fire on the Downline, give it a listen.

When to listen: General playlist. I don’t know why, but this song helps me with character creation. No reason for it, so yeah general playlist.

You ever love a band so much that you buy an album, sort of glance over it, and then it goes into your CD vault for months or years with barely another thought? That happened with this one… and boy am I kicking myself. Thorn Without a Rose is an amazing song off of Edguy’s Tinnitus Sanctus album!

When to listen: General playlist. This is modern hair metal at its finest. God I love this band… It also could be used as a celebratory song at the end of an album.

Mary Poppins Returns, My Late Review #Disney #MaryPoppins #EmilyBlunt

Hi All,

So my family finally got around to watching the new Mary Poppins movie and I want to give my thoughts on it. Anyone who’s read my blog long enough, knows that I have no love for the first Mary Poppins. It’s one of my two least favorite Disney classics for a plethora of reasons ranging from the history behind the film, the bastardization of books that were beloved to their writer, the horrible characters, and some of the more depressing scenes in the story. Yes, I am the 1% of people who hate the original Mary Poppins.

So when my wife puts on this movie for our weekly family movie night, my first reaction was to roll my eyes. One, this movie got what amounts to a C+ rating from critics and movie-goers, some loved it, some hated it. Two, this is yet another Disney sequel, likely a holdover from the Isner years that had little story and even less budget. Third, it’s a sequel to a story I have little tolerance for. So I resigned myself to 2+ hours of torture.

What I got… was not at all what I thought I was getting.

The story is set some 30+ years after the first movie. Mr. and Mrs. Banks have likely passed away, Bert is nowhere to be found (though it is mentioned that he’s travelling the globe), and Michael is now a widower with three children and is struggling to keep their home. Jane shows up regularly as well, living in a flat on the other side of town.  Michael is desperately trying to find a bank share that would pay off his house before the bank forecloses on it and… that’s where I’ll leave the plot. I really don’t want to spoil anything.

It is at this point Mary Poppins shows up and yes, in an unexpected twist, Jane and Michael actually remember her, though their memory on her magical abilities are somewhat questionable.

Because Mary Poppins is an ageless, magical, character, obviously Julie Andrews wouldn’t have worked here without extensive de-aging. Plus the fact that her vocal chords were damaged by nodule removal, made her a non-choice. Enter Emily Blunt. At first, I wasn’t sure about her, but if you’ve read any of the books… she actually fits the character better than Andrews IMHO. Andrews came off as a sweet person, but her character while kind, is supposed to be very firm. I never got that from Andrews, despite her best efforts. With Blunt, I get that. She has scenes where she comes off as stern, dignified, and not afraid to tell her ’employer’ how it is. She keeps her kindness guarded, but certainly let’s it show when needed. This, to me, is a more realistic representation of what a nanny would have been like at that time period… or at least one that children would not have run from. While she didn’t really resemble Andrews all that much, I found myself accepting her as Mary Poppins quite easily. Blunt’s performance really brought something to the performance that was quite welcome.

The musical numbers were done quite well. I honestly found myself afflicted by a tinge of nostalgia. Modern musicals, including Disney, haven’t really done so well. Despite the efforts of movies like La La Land, they just really fail to capture the whimsy of the musicals from the 50s-60s. Mary Poppins Returns somehow manages to revive the old Musical whimsy I thought long dead.

It was also great to see Disney give a nod to their old ways by going back to their old-school form of animation. They could have easily pulled a James and the Giant Peach and gone full CGI with ugly characters or tried to do something with Pixar, but they didn’t They took special care to make the animated scenes look like the ones we loved from movies like 101 Dalmatians, Robin Hood, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast. It was a welcome nod to the past that could have easily just been ignored.

I was actually quite surprised to see David Warner now playing the Banks’s next door neighbors, still sailing around on his rooftop ship. He’s been noticeably absent from the movie scene for years. As a fan of his work in Hansel and Gretel, Star Trek 5 and 6, Ninja Turtles 2, and Wing Commander, I was happy to see him back in a supporting role.

Cast members from the original made appearances in the film in small places where they could. Dick Van Dyke appearing at the end and performing a dance number made me smile widely. I admittedly didn’t like him in the previous Mary Poppins, but I was a big fan of his in other movies, including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Noticeably absent from the film was the original Mary Poppins, Julie Andrews. According to information I was able to find, the studio tried hard to get her into the film via cameo, but she declined out of respect to Emily Blunt. While I applaud the goodwill and can certainly respect that, I was honestly disappointed by the missed opportunity for Julie Andrews to give the film an endorsement and a kind of passing of the torch.

Instead, that job was given to another of Disney’s original darlings… Angela Lansbury. I won’t give away the part she played, but it’s actually quite appropriate and I loved hearing her sing for the first time in quite a while. I grew up with Lansbury playing Ms. Price in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, which is still one of my favorite Disney live musical movies to this day!

One criticism I read on another blog was a criticism noting the absence of Mr. Banks. The argument was that he was such a major character, that his noticeable absence from the film was a big detraction. On some level, I would agree with that, however… Mark Tomlinson, another Disney staple and the original Mr. Banks, sadly passed away in 2000 at the age of 83 from a stroke and he had been retired for 18 years prior. While people accepted Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins, I doubt they would have accepted someone else as Mr. Banks. Even Blunt was a bit of a risk for Disney.

So honestly, at the end of the day, Mary Poppins Returns is much better than it has a any right to be. Given my feelings about the first movie, Disney’s history of low budget cash-in sequels that all but ruined the original films, and some of Disney’s lack luster storytelling in their original movies as of late… my expectations could not have been lower. Needless to say, even if they hadn’t been, this film still would have gotten high marks. I actually loved this a lot more than the original movie and found myself smiling through it as my kids enjoyed it. Yes, mine and my parent’s generation’s Mary Poppins wasn’t great, but the one my kids will now call theirs more than makes up for it.

This is a great movie that should be viewed by everyone who loved Disney as a child, whether you liked the original or not.

DRAKIN: An Empire of Ashes

Chapter 1

So few of us left… No matter where we go, no matter how far we run… death always follows. The fires of Old London burned brightly in the distance. They engulfed the buildings in a veil of yellow and orange. They were miles away, but their smoke choked out the stars in the night sky. A dim orange hue added a sinister touch. The pungent odor from the decaying corpses added to the dark scene.Nayeli could hear the crackle of the massive flame like a million pieces of paper being crumpled in the distance. She ignored it and scraped through the rubble, looking for something, anything of value that could be traded for food or supplies. Bodies of dragons, EastCon, and Imperial soldiers littered the ruins. Many of them had been there for years. You would think that with all these bodies, at least one bolt pistol would have been overlooked! Nayeli was familiar with the scene, she’d lived in that horror for years in almost every city along the outskirts of the Imperial Territory. This was the fate of those who dared oppose the Eastern Empire. She kept her head close to the ground as she quickly turned over another body. A relieved sigh escaped her lips as she looked at his belt, “Yes!”Her eyes flared as they focused on a black holster that had been hidden under the fallen soldier’s hip. Unlike the others she’d seen that day, this holster wasn’t empty.Nayeli’s hands shook as she quickly unsnapped the flap that was holding the bolt pistol in place. She paused as a light flashed in the corner of her eye. A massive silhouette loomed in the distance, letting off a menacing hum. Her spine stiffened as a feeling of dread overtook her. An Imperial Hunter-killer… Shit, I need to get out of here. Her left hand wrapped around the pistol and pulled it from its holster. She had no time to check out her prize. The distant hum grew louder as the silhouette approached. She quickly hid the gun under her filthy red cloak and dove behind some rubble as the patrol ship passed overhead. A blue energy beam carefully scanned each piece of rubble.Nayeli pressed herself against the remains of a concrete wall. Like everything else in the area, it was covered in black soot. Small metal pipes protruded from the sides. Where ever it came from, something powerful must have dislodged it.As the hunter-killer passed overhead, her hand clenched her own gun as she held her breath. The ground shook, dislodging small pieces of rock and dust, sending them flying. Her lungs began to ache, but she refused to breathe as she waited. She pressed her back hard against the rough concrete and waited for fate to pass its judgment. If the hunter-killer found her, it was all over. There was no way to escape one of these things. They were fast, maneuverable, and almost completely impervious to ground attack. The curved armor covering the thrusters made shooting it down a difficult task. The ship cruised overhead as though it was ignoring her completely. The debris had blocked her from its field of vision. She was safe for the moment. Her lungs felt like they were about to explode when she finally released her breath. She pulled the dead soldier’s pistol from under her cloak. Though filthy, it looked intact. She pressed the safety in and waited to see what happened. Come on… give me something. The lights on the side flickered off and on a few times. It took a moment for the indicator on the side to come to life. The meter rose out of the red, passed through the yellow bar and stopped with barely a sliver of green illuminated. Yes, plenty of power left! She carefully inspected the markings, using the little rays light that peeked over the concrete, “Mauser T-21… with half a cartridge left. Not a bad piece…”Guns had been a valuable commodity for dissidents since the UPW was forced to withdraw from Europe. If anyone had any hopes of survival, they carried one, but that’s not why Nayeli was looking for it.The right buyer would pay handsomely for a gun. Even a small pistol like the Mauser was worth a small fortune. She quickly returned it to her pocket and focused her situation. The hunter-killer she’d seen in the distance was now passing over another large piece of debris. The sophisticated trackers could sense even the slightest movement from the ground. Even something as gentle as a heartbeat could give someone away. The sleek, black, cone-shaped vehicle passed quietly over the rubble. The blue thrusters glowed as they held the craft a few hundred feet off the ground.Scree! Scree! Scree!“Shit!”Had she been detected? No, it was too far away for the sensors to have caught her movements. The craft immediately turned and headed towards another pile of rubble where a second hunter-killer was hovering. At that moment, Nayeli saw what it was going after. A female dragon and two lings had tried to take refuge in a collapsed building. They raised their hands with terrified looks on their faces.Even at a distance, Nayeli could make out the sheer horror. The eyes of the dragonlings were soaked with tears. The older one trembled with fear while trying to hide it. They were fully aware of the fate that was likely waiting for them, Nayeli was sure of it.The older one threw her hands in the air, “No, wait, plea…”The terrible robotic sound of a rapid-fire pulse cannon cut off her screams. Nayeli immediately turned away and closed her eyes. She knew what was happening. The body of the female dragon hit the ground with a loud thud.A second later, the firing ceased and was replaced by the screams and sobs of the juvenile dragons. Nayeli closed her eyes, waiting for the next shots that would end their lives, but to her surprise, it never came. The pilot had apparently decided to spare the lings, but why?Their voices were quickly overpowered by an older, far more intense one, “Don’t move or we’ll open fire!”Nayeli turned back to see that two soldiers had apparently been winched down from the hunter-killer. They were dressed in heavy black armor and brandished massive rifles. Their masks made them look like fearsome monsters. The children obeyed the commands, likely more out of terror than obedience. Nayeli reached into a second pocket in her cloak and withdrew a larger pistol with a scope and significantly larger muzzle. The rubble crumbled as she rested her stomach against it and peered into the scope on the pistol. She steadied her grip and slowly moved the crosshairs so that they lined up with one of the primary thrusters on the hunter-killer. It was a narrow slit between the armor and the thruster itself. She sucked down a deep breath, waiting until she was ready. It was nearly an impossible shot, but she had to try. A scream from one of the dragonlings prompted her into action, “Let’s see how you like this, Imp scum!”She squeezed the trigger, unleashing three blasts from the pistol. The blue bolts screamed through the air, striking the hunter-killer on the port side primary thruster. The engine sputtered and died out, causing the ship to lose altitude and pull away. Yes, got it! Oh man, Joaquim will never believe that! The startled soldiers turned their attention to the rubble where the gunshot had come from. One of them raised his rifle, “We’re under attack, take cover!”Not happening! Nayeli grabbed something under her cloak. It was a smooth, round, device with red lights on it. She depressed a small button on top. The light changed to blue as it released a high-pitched sound. Here we go!She quickly stood up and threw it. Her body was only exposed for a moment, but it was all the soldiers needed. One of them took aim and opened fire, hitting her in the shoulder before the small orb exploded in a flash of light. She yelped and collapsed behind the rubble again, nursing her shoulder. She only had moments to deal with the pain and did her best to ignore it. It’s okay… it’s just pain… just pain… it’s not bad.Her hand squeezed the wound as she turned and looked back over to see what had happened. Both soldiers had been knocked out by the concussion grenade, while the dragonlings were sobbing a few feet away. They were both shaking, afraid to move from their spot.Nayeli sucked down a deep breath before moving over to the soldiers. She quickly grabbed their rifles and sidearms and threw them in her pack.A small flicker of light caught her eye from the side pouch on one of the soldier’s hips. He was carrying four replacement power cells for the guns. She grabbed the cartridges and tucked them away. Jackpot! Having grabbed everything she could carry, Nayeli turned to leave. The sobbing of the dragonlings stopped her in her path. She looked back at them with an indifferent stare, “You should get out of here. They’ve only been knocked out.”The two dragonlings curled up together but refused to speak. Nayeli frowned, “Don’t you have someplace to take refuge? A home somewhere?”One of them shook its head.“Nowhere?” She demanded. The dragonling again shook its head, “No.”Nayeli looked at the dead dragonkin a few feet away, “Was that your mother?”The tears in the dragonlings’ eyes answered the question for her, “Oh… I see…”“They came for us in the night… they killed our daddy! He never even…”The dragonling lowered its eyes, too upset to say anything else. Nayeli clenched her fists as she looked back at the two soldiers she’d knocked out, “I’m sorry…”This was nothing new. Several dragon refugees at her camp had similar stories to tell. She had slowly become numb to them over time. However, she couldn’t leave these babies where they were. She reached out her hand to the nearest dragonling, “Come on, I’ll take you somewhere safe.”The dragonlings looked up at her in fear. They looked at her hand but didn’t take it. The smaller of the two recoiled nervously.Nayeli sighed, “What’s your name?”The larger of the two blinked as it timidly looked up at her, “Eutera, and this is Ixen…”“Eutera, those people are going to come back. If they catch you, they’ll take you somewhere that will not be pleasant. I can’t stick around and make you feel better. I’m really sorry about your mother, but she gave her life to try to save you. I can help take you somewhere safe, but you have to come with me now.”In the distance, she could hear the smooth engine of a hunter-killer. Ixen sucked down a deep breath and quivered, “They’re… they’re coming back?”Nayeli looked into out towards the crumbling buildings as a shadow passed by. The damaged ship must have sent out a distress call, “It won’t be long now.”Nayeli turned back to the dragonlings, “You have to trust me! We don’t have any time, you’ve seen what these people will do! Now, are you coming or not?”Her eyes flared as she spoke. The dragonlings looked at her oddly for a moment before Ixen grabbed Eutera’s hand and then reached out for Nayeli’s.She smiled, “Okay, good. Let’s get out of here!”Readers,Do you have a question about writing, publishing, my stories, etc? From My Writing Playlist

First of all… I really fucking hate this movie. The fast-paced editing gave me an absolute headache, there were limited original songs, the story was akin to a Disney princess tale mix with the Bohemian Rhapsody, and just… ugh. Nothing but the scenery was worth watching… until the finale. This song, one of the few originals was actually well done. I can’t find the original version where the owner sings the final refrain… the better version, but oh well.

When to listen: Duh… ITS A LOVE SONG! Play it at the conclusion of any love story plot line, even if that’s not the end of the book. Let the romance go out with a bang!
