Taryn: The Lost Magnifica Sequel (Chapter 3)

III

“Today is going by so slowly… too slowly…”

Tired of conversing with Sentinel, Taryn shut him down and lay back on her bed for a few hours. Finally, she decided that she needed to get off campus and try to sort out these feelings. She needed to piece everything together, and staring at four walls wasn’t going to do it.

She stood and grabbed her thin leather jacket off of the hanger behind the door. She was going to take a ride and clear her head. Cruising through the city always worked in the past, she’d hoped it would be the same way now.

Taryn was about to leave when she saw the old framed photo on the table next to her bed. The glass was cracked, but the picture inside was still in nearly perfect shape. She picked it up and studied the familiar faces.

It was a beautiful picture of a human boy with an elf girl on his back at Revere Beach. They appeared to be her age. The blond elf looked extremely happy. The boy had a smile on his face, but he also gave off a feeling of worry.

Taryn was familiar with her family history and could have thought of any number of reasons why he would be worried. She smiled, “I know what you two went through to be together. No government cover-up will ever convince me otherwise.”

As she slipped her jacket on, she thought back to her childhood. She had met Lia’na a few times when she was young. Elves lived much longer than humans, so she had the opportunity to meet her ancestor, albeit briefly.

Even in her advanced age, Lia’na was very beautiful, but she seemed lonely. After so many years, Taryn understood why. She missed Toby more than anything. For reasons that were still a mystery, her death came well before its time, but it held no fear over her. Death was simply her final passage to be with the one she loved again.

Taryn put the picture back on the table, “Toby must have absolutely worshipped you… we should all be so lucky.”

She closed the door behind her and exhaled deeply. Without another thought, she headed down to the main level and out the front door. She was determined to get off campus.

Leslie House had a small shed next to the building. Taryn had befriended the groundskeeper, so he let her park her bike in there for protection against the elements. She opened the door and quickly looked around to make sure that no one was nearby.

Confident that the coast was clear, she stepped inside the shed where she was greated with a low rumbling noise. She smiled, “Hello Glide, ready for some fun?”

The 1960 Harley Davidson duo Glide that waited for her, revved its engine in response. Taryn chuckled, “Good, glad to hear it.”

Vroom…

“I know… I’m sorry, exams have me on edge, but hey we’ll have the summer to have fun.”

Rooroom!

“Yup, let’s hit downtown.”

At that moment, Sentinel appeared out of her armband, “Do you actually understand this antiquated contraption?”

The bike roared, indicating that it didn’t appreciate being called a contraption. Taryn ran her hand over the seat, like she would a dog’s back. She had spent years upgrading her family’s old bike.

Fossil fuel reserves were slowly drying up and becoming too expensive, so she upgraded the engine to be able to process a synthetic fuel that was used to power older cars and bikes. The internal combustion engine was now almost completely a thing of the past and all modern cars were built with a new hydromolecular engine. Though more efficient, Taryn knew the secret of her bike and wasn’t going to risk destroying its life force, so she only updated what she needed to.

Taryn chuckled, “Ignore him, I’m thinking of tweaking his personality engrams anyway.”

“Fine.” Sentinel replied. “Excuse me for asking a question.”

Taryn sat down on the bike and looked at Sentinel, “Well to answer your question, I don’t really know. I hear the engine and am able to determine emotions from the bike. I can’t really explain how I understand it.”

“Perhaps it’s something to do with you lineage?”

Taryn shrugged, “Maybe…”

Vroom!

“I agree,” Taryn replied, “thoughts for another day, let’s go!”

She threw on a pair of goggles and a helment and rode out of the shed. She turned the bike behind the building and then turned onto Main Street. The bike roared as she hit the accelerator.

“You want to take over?” She yelled.

Vroom!

Taryn released the accelerator and lightened her grip on the handlebars, “All right, show me the sights!”

The bike, Glide, picked up speed as it hit the I-93 South ramp and headed for Boston. Taryn sat back slightly as she viewed everything going on around her. There was thankfully no traffic on the way into Boston. Everyone who needed to be in the city was mostly already there.

Taryn’s eyes lit up as she reached the Zakim Bridge. She looked over the side to see the Paul Revere Park Memorial to the soldiers who had lost their lives defending the city. Now even the government wouldn’t acknowledge what truly happened.

Glide neared the guard rail as it passed under the old suspension cables. To her left, a ’77 Ford Hovercharge passed her by. The car was white with a silver trim and wheels folded up underneith for emergencies. The driver eyed the old bike suspiciously as it passed through his window.

Taryn didn’t care for hovercars. Too much could go wrong with the magnetic system. Tires were more expensive, harder to get, and not enviornmentally friendly, but they were tried and true.

The moment that the car was out of sight, Taryn noticed that the weight of the bike was being distributed to the back and the front tire was no longer touching the pavement, “Glide, what are you doing?”

Glide didn’t respond.

“Glide? Glide!”

Still nothing.

Taryn was about to panic when suddenly the tires began to glow white and the bike lifted off the road completely. She watched in awe as Glide continued to climb higher and higher, “Okay, next time give me some warning. I don’t like surprises!”

Vroom!

The chill of thin air passed over her skin as she flew high enough into the air to see the tops of most of the buildings. As Glide circled the Hancock tower a few times, Taryn could see the work being done on the building. Its old glass windows were being replaced with transparent foil solar-energy conducting ones.

Taryn flew even higher until she could see the atmospheric purifier that was installed atop several Boston skyscrapers to cut down on emissions and repair past damage. Though cold, when Taryn breathed in, she felt as though the cool air was cleaning out her lungs.

She hugged Glide’s chasis with her hips and spread her arms, “Keep me steady, Glide.”

She closed her eyes as the wind passed over her face and began mouthing the lyrics of one of her favorite songs as the tune passed through her mind,

“And so they danced with their hands clasped,

Around the room of Ancients past,

And so the tales of old repeat again.

When all the time has come and gone,

Another way will we bring you,

On great wings of hope,

A seed soon to sprout,

Will conquer all darkness.”

Taryn released the air from her lungs and looked down on the city. It was at that moment that she realized how much she wanted to share all of this with Bobby. She had told him some of her family’s history when she had downed a few drinks, but she doubted that he believed her.

Despite her desires, Taryn knew that it was too soon. She decided to give Bobby a chance, and if she got close enough to him, she’d start letting him in on a few of these secrets. It was only fair.

A chill down her spine told Taryn that it was time go go home, “Glide, let’s head back, I’m getting cold.”

Glide turned around and headed back to the bridge. Within a matter of minutes, the bike touched down on the highway, heading north this time. As the wheels hit the pavement, the bike roared.

Taryn looked down at it with worry, “You overdid it again, didn’t you?”

Glide made a timid clicking noise in response. Taryn sighed, “Look, you can’t do that. This isn’t like how it was when you were with your previous owners. You know you don’t have unlimited power. Don’t push youself.”

Vroom!

“I know you were just having fun and I appreciate you showing me the city from up there, but I don’t want you overdoing it. You’ve survived 4 generations of my family. You’re not dying on my watch.”

Vroom!

“Yes, I love you too.” Taryn replied. “Why don’t you let me take the reigns again while you rest?”

Vroom…

Taryn placed her hands on the handlebars again and held on as Glide gave her control. The wind blowing in her face was heavier now. It also came with the odor of industry from the city around her.

Taryn was used to the city, she’d grown up there, but part of her always yearned for the trees of the forest. She chalked that up to her elven heritage. Her great grandmother had always experienced difficulties in dealing with the city, but she managed to get by without any issues.

It wasn’t long before she began to see trees ahead of her as the bike carried her back to college.

Taryn: The Lost Magnifica Sequel (Chapter 2)

II

Class started the moment their professor appeared at the front of the room. She was a middle-aged woman with graying hair and a kind smile. Though her eyes showed years of endless study and nights without sleep, she never complained.

Taryn admired her for her ability to mix historical fact with both human and Elven legend to fill in the missing gaps. She quieted down and poked Merrin, “Shh, you’re going to get us in trouble again. Professor Pacewitz is here.”

The professor looked up at Taryn and smiled, “Thank you, Ms. Arrigan. I trust you managed to complete the paper I assigned?”

Taryn nodded, “I emailed it to you last night.”

“Very good.” She replied. “I look forward to reading it.”

Professor Pacewitz sighed as she spoke, “Now class, who can tell me where we left off on Wenesday?”

Merrin raised his hand while giving Taryn a smug look as though he were saying, “Yeah, see? I pay attention too!”

The professor looked up and nodded to Merrin, “Go ahead.”

“Ma’am, ye was talkin’ bout the Boston restorating effort a 2014, followin’ them unexplained attacks on our city.”

The professor nodded, “Very good, Mr. Telog, you are correct. Now the initial attack was a combination of dragons, centaurs, griffons, and other creatures that, up until then, we had long dismissed as fantasy and folklore.  Their inexplicable departure was cause for concern and kept the National Guard on its toes. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the city was already on alert when the corpse army began to form. Can anyone tell us who was responsible?”

Taryn raised her hand, “Ma’am, it was the result of a domestic terrorist organization that had acquired a piece of the Lux Mundi.”

The professor nodded, “And the name of their group was…?”

“The Filis de Lux, ma’am, which translates to Children of Light.”

“Excellent Taryn,” Professor Pacewitz replied, “you have been doing your reading.”

Taryn sat back and listened to the professor talk about events that she was all too familiar with. She’d heard these stories over the years, passed down by her family, but they differed from the official accounts in a few key places.

As the professor began to wrap up her lecture, she looked out at the class, “Now, can anyone tell me how the corpse army was defeated?”

Taryn raised her hand with a devious look on her face, “Professor, a lone group of college students, led by an enchanter infiltrated their base and defeated their leader.”

Giggles and low laughing came from around the room as Professor Pacewitz rolled her eyes, “Ms. Arrigan, I am well aware of your family’s history, as well as their involvement in fighting the Filis de Lux, but the stories of your great grandfather having supernatural powers has long since been discredited. Now can anyone tell me the historically accurate ending?”

Another student spoke up, “Ma’am, it was a surgical strike by our combined naval and air power.”

Professor Pacewitz nodded, “Very good, that is the officially released version of what happened.”

Taryn sat back with a smile and shook her head. She knew that this was nothing more than the government attempting to slowly rewrite history so that what happened would soon disappear into myth. She knew the truth and it was passed down by her family. In the end, that’s all that mattered.

Merrin looked over at her suspiciously and whispered, “Ye enjoyed that.”

Taryn nodded, but said nothing as the professor finished up, “Okay, so does anyone have any questions before we adjorn for the weekend?”

The class sat silently for a few moments. Taryn didn’t see a single hand go up. The professor nodded, “Very well see you all on Monday. Have a good weekend.”

Merrin got up and turned to Taryn as he packed his bags, “Ye really love tryin’ ta git under people’s skin, don’t ye?”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

Merrin’s eyes narrowed into an accusing stare, “Yeah ye do! Ye knew exactly what de professor would say bout that. Ye just wanted your story to be heard.”

Taryn shrugged, “Maybe…”

“Ye as sneaky as a sharpy,” Merrin said through a smirk, “I swear.”

A spark of anger entered Taryn’s eyes, “Hey, not cool!”

She turned her head slightly to the side, giving Merrin a clear view of the points on her ears. Merrin’s eyes widened as he realized his error, “Shit… sorry. I keep forgettin that you be part elf.”

Taryn nodded, “Its fine, just ease off, okay?”

“No problem.”

Merrin had never met an elf before in his life. With the increase of interspecies breeding and the lack of viable offspring coming from the few purebloods still breeding, elves had become extinct. Half elves were about as close as anyone could get, “By the way, how much elf are ye?”

Taryn shrugged, “Who knows anymore. Less than 40%, I think? My great grandmother was an elf who married a human, and my grandmother married another elf, but my father was human… So now here I am.”

Merrin nodded as Taryn stood up, “Yeah here ye are, a pain in de ass. Do ye really believe those stories bout yer family?”

“Yes I do.” Taryn replied. “I don’t know why, I can’t explain it, but I feel like they’re real.”

Taryn followed Merrin out of the room, “By the way, are ye seein’ Bobby again tonight?”

The very mention of his name caused her cheeks to flare up. She wasn’t sure if they were blushing bright enough for Merrin to see, but she could feel them, “I… well I assume so. He’s a nice guy after all.”

“Ye like ‘im.”

Taryn rolled her eyes, “Oh shut up…”

Merrin laughed as they walked outside, “Well for what it’s worth, I think ye should give ‘im a shot.”

“Why?”

“Well ye very particular bout who ye spend time with.” Merrin replied. “Heck, yer fucking picky as shit. The fact that ye spend time wit ‘im at all says something. Think bout it.”

Taryn shrugged, “Maybe…”

“Ye getting’ some food?”

“At some point, I’m not hungry at the moment.”

“Aight, well I’m off to de café then. Call me later if ye want to hang.”

Taryn nodded and headed in the other direction. She tapped on her small wristband, “Sentinel, can you locate Bobby Nielson?”

The wristband emitted a holographic image of a human figure. It had no gender and was almost featureless. It processed for a moment before responding. The image’s voice was mechanical and barely had any emotion in it, “Checking his key code… I’ll need the pin he gave you to access that information.”

Bobby had given her that code a while back. She was at a party when she met Bobby. The two of them talked for hours on end. When he brought her home, she began to suffer from odd visions like the one she’d seen that morning. The next thing she remembered was waking up in her room.

Bobby met up with her on campus later and gave her the pin just in case she needed help. Since then, the two had become very close, though emotionally, she still kept him at arms length.  As far as she was concerned, she was heiress to a proud family name. She had no brothers or sisters, so it was up to her to choose a suitable mate and she wasn’t sure if he met her standards or not yet. Some might view her as a bit of a princess if she’d ever revealed her feelings, but she didn’t care.

“Pin number Alpha Whiskey nine, five, five.”

The human figure nodded, “Thanks, I’m processing that info now… let’s see… it would appear he’s in Arcanus’s main classroom hall… room 206.”

“Cross reference that time and location with Arcanus’s course catalogue, what time will he be out of class?”

The figure looked at Taryn suspiciously, “Taryn, some might consider this stalking.”

“Just do it!” Taryn said in an annoyed tone.

Sentinel shrugged, “Okay fine. What do I care, it’s not like anyone will think I’m creepy for this.”

“He gave me the pin for a reason, you know?” Taryn sighed.

Sentinel brought its legs up so that the figure was in a sitting position on Tayrn’s arm, “Cross referencing… processing time now…”

It took Sentinel a moment, but he was able to come up with the information she needed, “Got it, he’ll be in class until 2pm. Course catalogue lists him as in Course 421 ‘European Socialism of the 20th Century.’ Quite the specific course.”

Taryn nodded as she started back to her room, “He’s always been into politics. That sounds about right for him.”

“Query,” Sentinel asked, “if you’re so interested in this boy, why haven’t you persued a romantic relationship with him?”

“Must every relationship between a guy and a girl be anything more than plutonic? What if I’m not interested in him like that?” Taryn asked.

“You are.” Sentinel replied as they reached the door to Leslie house.

Taryn glared at the human figure, “How the hell do you know?”

“Your pulse increases whenever you see him, your pupils dialate and you begin to persperate. Also, your pheromone level…”

“Okay, enough.” Taryn replied in almost a yell, certain that her face was bright red. “Of all the AI personal assistants I could have bought, why’d I go for you?”

“Because you have wisdom that transcends your age.”

Taryn rolled her eyes, “Yeah right.”

“You still haven’t answered my question.” Sentinel said.

Taryn climbed the staircase and headed down the hall, “I… I don’t know why I haven’t. There’s just… something about him… It seems like my dreams and visions only happen when he’s nearby. It may be coincidence, but it gives me pause.”

Sentinel processed that information as Taryn opened the door to room 204 and entered the room, “The Elven brain is designed with an extra sense. Perhaps it’s trying to warn you about some danger surrounding him?”

“But I’m not even a half-elf.”

Sentinel nodded, “True… which may be why your impressions aren’t easier to decipher. That part of your brain may not be as well developed as a pure blood elf. I could access some articles on the subject if you wish?”

Taryn shook her head, “No, that’s okay… So what are your interpretations here? Do you think my sixth sense is trying to warn me that he’s dangerous in some way?”

“I’m not programmed to be able to interpret feelings or dreams. They could be a warning about him, but they also could be a warning that something could happen to him.”

Taryn collapsed on her bed, “So you’re basically telling me nothing.”

“Your dreams are your own.” Sentinel replied. “You’ll have to figure that out on your own.”

From My Writing Playlist

Had enough of Edguy yet? Too bad.

Well today I’m going to introduce everyone to another band. This album ‘The Unforgiving’ is a major departure from their old style, but remains today… in my opinion, the best album they ever put out. Nearly every song on it is incredibly bad ass and really memorable. Faster is one of the album covers and it does not disappoint.

When to Listen: Burnout.  This song is pure energy and will help you get back to writing. I’d also say that its a good struggle song for your main character as they deal with the changes to their life that make up your story.

Taryn: The Lost Magnifica Sequel

Hello all,

Today and for the next few days, I’m going to start sharing some stories that simply didn’t make the cut. They are books I started working on, but eventually gave up dealing with either due to burnout, or because I simply didn’t like the direction they were going… or I scrapped the stories and started in on a new one and used a few of their plot elements.

So we’re going start of with Taryn. This story takes place in our not-so-distant future, about 100 years or so after the events of Magnifica. Taryn is the great-granddaughter of the Last Enchanter. She’s roughly 35% Elven and 65% human. Though only a small degree of Elven blood flows through her veins, she possess certain abilities that had long since been thought lost. These are enhanced by her Elven traits.

Anyway, I wanted to post these stories in case there is any interest in me continuing to write them. If I get an overall response on any of them, I’ll consider revisiting the work. Remember though, these stories are in very

Anyway, enjoy what little of Taryn’s story I was able to write:

I

Darkness surrounded Taryn as and her breathing became more rapid. Her head darted back and forth as she looked for any sign of life, “Hello? Is anyone there?”

No response.

“Hello, hello?”

An odd sound appeared in the distance, it was little more than a whisper, but nothing that she could make out.

“Is someone there?”

The voice grew louder and the darkness began to fade. At that moment, a pair of red eyes appeared in front of her. The darkness was fading fast now as a man with pointed ears and long black hair appeared in front of her. Goose bumps appeared on her skin as she took a fearful step back. Her heart raced as though she had run a great distance, “Who are you?”

The creature’s mouth open as it continued its menacing gaze. Its eyes burned as bright as the campfires she’d sat around in the woods of New Hampshire when her high school friends had gone camping. The creatures dark hair made them appear even brighter.

A high pitched scream was the only response she received as the creature suddenly moved forward and passed right through her. She covered her ears, trying to block it out, “Who are you, what do you want?”

As the creature passed through her, the pain of the scream became intolerable. She squeezed her eyes closed and cried out, hoping she’d be heard over the screaming, “Stop it!”

“Whoa, Taryn, are you okay?”

Taryn gasped as she opened her eyes, “Bobby…”

“Easy, sounds like you had a rough ride.” Bobby replied as Taryn slowly sat up. “What happened?”

She rubbed her eyes before turning to him, “It was the same as before.”

“The dreams again, huh?”

Taryn nodded, “Now I’m glad I left my door unlocked. I keep seeing this man with pointed ears. I don’t know who he is, but I feel like he’s important somehow. It’s strange.”

Bobby’s lips twisted thoughtfully, “Pointed ears?”

“Yeah, like the pictures we saw in biology…” She replied. “I think he might have been some kind of elf.”

“You mean a half elf?”

“No, his ears were very pronounced.”

Bobby frowned, “Taryn, the last elf died a few years ago. They’ve been extinct for a few years now. You of all people should know that.”

Taryn nodded and ran her hand over the point of her own ear, “Yeah… don’t remind me. Even so, that’s what I saw.”

“Maybe your own Elven senses are playing tricks on you?”

“Maybe.”

Bobby smirked as he stood up, “You should probably get up. Your hair’s a mess!”

Taryn ran a hand through her dirty blond hair and brushed it back behind her ears, “All right I’m up, now leave me alone!”

She looked over at her clock as her feet touched the floor, “7am… well at least I have time for a shower.”

Bobby nodded, “I leave you to it then.”

“Thanks.”

The moment Bobby was gone from the room, Taryn stripped out of the sweat-soaked pjs she was wearing, grabbed the towel hanging off of her bedpost, and headed for the bathroom.

The hot water pouring over her skin helped wake her up. Her hazel eyes widened as her newfound energy flowed through her. A cloud of steam surrounded her as she washed herself down. She took a few minutes to savor the serenity. College had always been something of a rollercoaster ride for her so she appreciated any moment of peace she received.

Thankfully, classes were wrapping up for the summer. At which point, she would need to go find a job if she wanted any spending money for the summer. It wasn’t something she enjoyed, but she knew that she needed to. Her parents had provided everything for her up until this point and had even taken out a mortgage on the family home to make sure that she would make it through college debt free.

Knowing that did not make life any easier for Taryn and she refused to take another penny from her parents as a result. Her goal was to pay the mortgage to make sure that the house would always remain theirs.

She grabbed the towel and dried herself off before moving to the bedroom to get dressed. She pulled open her top drawer to the usual assortment of underwear and grabbed a pair of hip huggers. Normally on a Friday, she’d go for the bikini briefs, but she didn’t have a date or any plans for the evening, so she wasn’t looking to impress anyone. She quickly slid the underwear over her legs before reaching for a bra.

Once she was dressed in her normal black capris and white blouse, she went about fixing her hair. The shower had worked wonders. Her hair was very thin, so combing out the knots wasn’t difficult. Her ears were slightly longer and more pointed than that of a full human. It was something she relished as keeping her hair tucked behind them was much easier.

Finally, she turned to her small make up case. I don’t think so. She thought to herself, not today. Taryn wasn’t a huge fan of makeup and often just went without it. Lipstick and maybe some cheek blush were about all she’d tolerate if she was going on a date, but even then, she’d often just wipe it off later.

At that moment her eye caught the digital clock on her desk. 7:45

“Fuck!” She blurted out. “I’m going to be late!”

Without a thought to her book back, she dashed out the door, down the steps, and out the front entry way. With a clear path, she dashed across campus to the main building. She was determined to minimize her tardiness.

The warm breeze that passed over Taryn’s skin was no comfort to her as she ran. The grass around her was slowly returning to green as spring was quickly giving away to summer. Typical Boston, she thought to herself. The seasons here change so quickly.

Taryn arrived at the main classroom hall with barely a few minutes to spare. The building was a large brick structure with gold lettering on the side that read ‘Arcanus University.’ She immediately proceeded inside.

She quickly made her way down the hall to room 103 and took her seat. The room was a large auditorium that seated about a hundred people, but only thirty seats were occupied. Either the class wasn’t very popular or they were just using a large room due to lack of space.

Taryn favored the back of the room for reasons she could never quick figure out. She sat down and pulled out her books as a portly dwarf sat down next to her, “Hey Taryn.”

“How are you, Merrin?”

The dwarf shrugged, “Can’t complain… much.”

“Did you break into that rock salt vodka again?”

“No…”

“Merrin?”

“Maybe…”

Taryn shook her head, “You know you can’t handle that stuff. It blows right through you!”

“Hey dat shit be dwarven-made!” Merrin replied. “I can handle anythin’ my people make. Rememba that!”

Taryn chuckled, “Okay Merrin…”

From My Writing Playlist

I love this song. This is not just on my writing playlist, it’s on my driving playlist. This is something I like to listen to when I’m out driving at night. It makes me feel like going and hanging out with some friends at a Boston bar, like in the old days.

When to Listen: Either when your main character is returning to their normal life or when you’re story-building. This is something you listen to as you’re putting your characters together, establishing their existence and their personalities.

The End

Hi Jim,

In an earlier post, you mentioned bringing reality into a fantasy series where it didn’t belong could damage it. You also mentioned how an ending could make or break a story. I’m not trying to be too critical, but that kind of irked me as I finished reading Damnation. The way you chose to end it was really sad. I just was wondering if you could comment on that and how you justify that ending with everything else you said.

Thanks,
Dann

Hi Dann,

Honestly I’m not sure what you mean. From my perspective, I don’t view the ending as all that sad.

MAJOR SPOILER ALERT AHEAD!! IF YOU HAVEN’T READ DIVINITY AND DAMNATION AND PLAN TO, SKIP FOR NOW!!!

Let me preface this by saying that there is a difference between realism and believability.

Realism is real-world elements. They can be brought into a fantasy world appropriately, but often is shoe-horned in either at the last minute or at a time that just messes up the story. Then the writer deals with criticism by throwing his/her hands up and saying that this is how it works in the real world… despite nothing else in their story working that way.

Believability is something within a suspension of disbelief. Basically in a fantasy world, one might get the idea that such a thing would not exist. However those people haven’t done their homework. In Fantasy, the writer creates a world and as such, creates a set of rules for that world to live by. They set up a society, a nature, and a rule of law. Everything has to abide by that, even the supernatural.

Let’s take Star Wars for example. At the end of Return of the Jedi, Darth Vader dies. Could he have survived and been brought back to fight with the Rebellion? I HIGHLY DOUBT IT!!!

Why? Let’s see… he murdered a ton of Jedi, including children, he assisted in turning an entire world to ash, he was responsible for several other confirmed deaths, including men and women under his command, he also assisted the Emperor in pretty much decimating the societies and climates of other worlds that we’d seen in the novels. This is a man whom, if he had survived, would have been brought up on war crimes the moment the New Republic had asserted itself. It likely would have been the first order of business for them. He’d have the families of all he killed crying out for justice, and other worlds reeling for vengeance.

A second reason that he couldn’t survive is because, despite Luke bringing him back to the good side, there are crimes that are irredeemable, even by Fantasy standards. Darth Vader’s death, and the life he wasted that he’d never be able to spend time with his children was his final penance for everything he did. It is likely why he was able to join Obi Wan and Yoda as he did.

Simply put, there is no way Vader was walking away from what he did. It literally couldn’t happen.

Now let’s take a look my characters, Xaphine and Piero. LAST CHANCE ON SPOILERS…

Keep in mind, my story had a much bigger hurdle to overcome. It took place in our history. I wrote it very carefully so that our history could proceed. I wanted someone to read the story and think ‘Wow… this could have actually happened and we just didn’t see it in our history books.’

As you can imagine, meshing actual history with a fantasy world wasn’t easy. The story takes place during the War of the League of Cognac, and ends during the final battle. Piero is a soldier for Florence… the war didn’t end well for them. Their army was completely decimated and the city was sacked. In the end, putting Piero in the thick of the fighting of the final battle pretty much spelled doom for him, but it was more than that. He died for a purpose… and I mean more than just the freedom of his country.

What did he die for? Well let’s take a look at Xaphine.

Before she was Xaphine Lorenzi, her name was Xaphan, a powerful tactician and general in God’s army. During Lucifer’s uprising, she turned on God, opting to lead her friend Lucifer’s forces into battle. She believed wholeheartedly in the cause he was fighting for; freeing angels from eternal servitude to a child race (humans). She fought the war for him to a stalemate, resulting in the numbers of angels being drastically reduced. Whole choirs were decimated and/or completely wiped out. After losing the war and being exiled, she helped Lucifer build the Kingdom of Hell out of Sheol went to work plotting a second invasion with their newfound powers. She help set plans in motion that caused most of the problems that take place in Divinity and Damnation.

So ask yourself, is she redeemable?

Honestly, yes… despite having a lot to answer for. One, she fought with honor, attempting to make sure that only the minimum Angelic blood was spilled. She made sure that non-combatants had a chance to get out of the way, and always fought honorably. Yes the war cost lives, but that is usually the case with war, and she believed that their cause was just. She stood by Lucifer for as long as he remained true to the cause. The moment he betrayed it and started vying for power, she turned on him.

So how do you redeem a traitor?

Well for someone who was guilty of so much, it wasn’t easy. First and foremost, I don’t actually redeem her in the book. Xaphine, attempting to save a human… a creature she at one time despised, nearly at the cost of her own life, prompted God to make her an offer;

“Live life as a human, prove that you can be good and just, avoid temptation, and an angelic role will be waiting for you upon your death. As will Piero.”

Piero’s death gave her something to fight for. 30-50 years alone, doing God’s work as a human female in the Middle Ages, was how she would earn her penance.

That is where I ended the story. Though I hinted at it, I didn’t actually give the reader a definitive answer. She may have redeemed herself or she may not have. That is for the reader to decide, and honestly, I don’t think that there is any other way I could have done it. For someone who had fallen so far, it would have taken a massive hurdle for them to redeem themselves. So I left it to the reader to see if the task I left for her was good enough.

That’s not realism, that’s keeping things within the suspension of disbelief while obeying the rules of the universe I  created. I originally wrote it that Xaphine would be transformed into a human permanently and could only return to the Celestial World as a spirit upon her death, after living with Piero. I hated that ending.

In my second ending Piero dies, and Xaphine attempts to save him, but when she fails, he appears to her, removed the taint from her spirit and takes her back with him to Heaven. Not much better.

I honestly couldn’t see her just being let back in without her having to make some kind of reconciliation for her crimes. This was the best way of doing it as far as I was concerned.

Hope that makes sense and I really hope you enjoyed Damnation.

DO NOT MESS WITH NERDS!

Geeks also, but nerds especially. They use their brains and eventually… the toys they like to play with… can become powerful weapons:

I love this band. I saw them live and got to meet their lead singer recently. Great guys… everyone should experience them once in their lives. Their shows aren’t just concerts, they’re experiences. The band members actually do tricks on stage… things you wouldn’t think possible while playing musical instruments. They really play to the crowd in every possible way.

This song… I just love it. It’s Heavy Metal, but there’s actually singing, honest to God harmonized vocals, and an upbeat tone. That’s not typical in metal.

When to Listen: When you’re writing your ending. Don’t believe me? Fast forward to 5:54. HEAR THE SOUNDS OF FREEDOM RING, IN A SILENT DREAM, AND A MILLION MILES AWAY!!!!

God that’s awesome!

Destiny: Divinity’s Finale, Book 6, Chapter 8

VIII

Aralyn awoke as the sunlight poured through her window. She sat up and stretched as she opened her eyes. At first, her eyes were extremely blurry, but they began to clear as she rubbed them and blinked. An unfamiliar room appeared in front of her and she looked around in shock. Where was she, and more importantly, why did this room seem oddly familiar to her.

Aralyn placed her bare feet on the floor and pushed herself into a standing position. It took her a few moments to find her balance as her head cleared, but when she was ready, she left the room and proceeded down a small flight of wooden stairs. Sounds of activity aroused her senses as she made her way down to the first floor.

The sounds got louder and she could hear familiar voices as she reached the first floor and pushed the door to the kitchen open. On the other side Gilles was tending to a hot stove, while Baltazar and Lailah worked on cleaning the utensils they had used. It appeared as though Morgan had gone into town and picked up some fresh food to cook. It was be the first decent meal any of them had enjoyed since Papi died.

Morgan stood behind the door sharpening a knife as she came in the room. He looked up and dropped the knife, “Well hello there!” He said in a cheerful voice, “Hey everybody, look who’s finally awake!”

The group turned to see her. Baltazar dropped what he was doing, walked over to her and hugged her tightly, “Good morning, I’m so relieved to see you up and about.”

Gilles and Lailah stopped their work and joined the rest of the group. Aralyn looked at Lailah nervously, “Did we do it? Did we… win?”

Lailah smiled, “Oh yes, we won. The imp army was completely destroyed and Paeles has been reclaimed by the land. No one will ever be tortured by those haunted souls again.”

“What about Legion,” she asked in an insisting tone, “I saw his body dissolve and float away into the clouds. What happened?”

“Relax,” Lailah replied, “Legion will never harm another person ever again. He has been reclaimed by the Most High. Legion has become a part of him again.”

A look of concern came over Aralyn’s face, “But if the Most High reclaimed him, won’t that mean that God has a dark side again?”

“Yes,” Lailah admitted, “But you mustn’t worry. Humans have the same darkness inside of them. The Most High will adjust and learn to live with his as easily as you have. In that way, Legion will be trapped within the Most High forever.”

Aralyn closed her eyes and breathed a sigh of relief, “All is well again?”

“Better than that,” Baltazar replied grabbing her hand, “Come on!”

He led Aralyn out of the kitchen and out the front door. Aralyn looked at him oddly, “Baltazar where are we going, what has you so…”

Upon seeing the house from the outside, she finally realized where she was, “Oh my…”

Baltazar spread his arms, presenting her home to her, “Welcome home!”

Aralyn looked around with wide eyes, “How… how did you do this?”

“I can do many things,” Baltazar replied, “But you did this.”

“How…” Aralyn asked, astonished.

Lailah came up behind her, “When your powers restored the Black Vengeance after she sank, you also restored Mont Saint Michel and your home here.”

She quickly turned around, “So then… Sister Mary?”

Lailah frowned and shook her head, “She was already dying. She was very sick and had only a limited time left. The Most High allowed her to avoid the pain of a second death and allowed her to remain.”

Aralyn lowered her eyes, “I… I didn’t even know that…”

“You couldn’t have,” Lailah replied, “She hid it well, but don’t worry, she is well cared for and happy now.”

“So this… is my home.” Aralyn whispered in a state of shock.

“One of them,” Baltazar replied as he pointed at the Black Vengeance, anchored off shore, “You still have a place with us.”

Aralyn nodded, “And I wouldn’t trade that for anything. That is always first and foremost my home.”

At that moment, Aralyn noticed the boat moored on the dock attached to her house, “Is that… it can’t be!”

She took off down the dock and climbed the ramp leading to the small ship. Without another thought, she entered and explored the cabin, and then the hold. Baltazar and their friends followed her down the dock as fast as they could, but she had long since disappeared below deck. They waited on the dock for her to reappear. When she finally did, her eyes looked mystified, “This… this is where it all started. This is the Patrisi fishing boat.”

Baltazar nodded as he looked it over, “It’s an older design to be sure, even older than the Black Vengeance, but it appears to have been updated at some point.”

Aralyn nodded as she walked back down the ramp and joined the group. She was about to say something to Baltazar when her eyes suddenly went wide with a look of both happiness and fear. Baltazar turned to see three angels standing behind him, “Xaphine, Ariel, Roselyn, good to see you!”

Xaphine smiled and bowed, “Very good to see you as well. You both did wonderfully.”

Aralyn curtseyed, “Thank you, you honor me.”

“You honor me,” Xaphine replied, “Because of you, the events that started eighty years ago have come full circle. All loose ends have been tied up and the last hints of damage that Michael had caused have been swept away.”

“What of the forces of Lucifer?” Morgan asked, “We never would have succeeded without them.”

Xaphine nodded, “No… No we wouldn’t have. The Most High and Lucifer have reached an understanding. They are no longer at war with one another. Lucifer will be made part of a new council of angels that includes the archangels. They will assist the Most High as the ruling body. This should prevent the Most High from getting so fatigued from dealing with the wars humankind brings upon itself. Officially, Lucifer still rules the underworld, but he will now answer to the Most High in all things.”

Gilles frowned, “Do you think that is for the best?”

“Only time will tell,” Ariel replied, “Many angels weren’t happy with this decision, but a lot of good may come from it.”

Xaphine nodded and turned back to face Aralyn, “Now it’s time for you to claim your place amongst the Choirs.”

She reached out her hand to Aralyn, “Don’t be afraid.”

Aralyn placed her fingers in Xaphine’s hand. Suddenly her body began to glow. Aralyn watched as her skin began to emanate a bright golden aura. Suddenly a new sense of clarity and a feeling of satisfaction came over her. Her wings began to shimmer as though they had been covered in gold dust and she lifted herself off the ground to feel the wind blow through them.

Baltazar watched and feared her knew what this meant. After a few moments, she lowered herself back to the ground, “This… this is incredible.”

Xaphine smiled, “Just wait until you see the Celestial World.”

Aralyn looked at her oddly, “What do you mean?”

“You have proven yourself worthy to pick up your ancestor’s legacy,” Roselyn replied, “You can now come with us and help us do the Most High’s bidding.”

The smile disappeared from Aralyn’s face, “No…”

Xaphine looked at her oddly, “What is it?”

“I’m not going,” Aralyn replied, “I have friends and a family here, I will not go…”

“You don’t have a choice, sister,” Xaphine insisted, “You’re one of us, you belong with your own people.”

“These are my people!” Aralyn shot back, “Just because the blood of an angel courses through my veins, it does not make me any less an angel. My mother way human, my father was human, and so am I. I’m not leaving…”

Aralyn exchanged glances with Baltazar. More than anything, she wanted to reassure him that she wasn’t going anywhere. He nodded to her as she turned to face Xaphine. Roselyn saw Baltazar’s expression and understood what was going on, “You love this man, don’t you?”

Aralyn nodded, “He stood by me, cared for me, and loved me. I gave him my heart and I will not leave him.”

Xaphine shook her head, “I have heard enough of this…”

“And I have heard this before,” Roselyn’s voice appeared from behind.

Xaphine turned to see her smiling at Aralyn. She stepped out from behind Xaphine and touched Aralyn’s chin, “You are so much like Adaline… it’s incredible. She made the same argument you are now.”

Aralyn moved closer to Roselyn to the point where their cheeks almost touched, “Please don’t take me away from him…”

Roselyn stepped back, smiled, and nodded. She then turned to Xaphine, “General, we can’t take her.”

“What madness is this?” Xaphine shouted, “The Most High has commanded that she return with us. It’s out of my hands.”

“Is it really,” Ariel chimed in, “General, since when do you put so much stock in the rules. The Most High is God above all others, but you command his armies. Come on Xaphine…”

Xaphine crossed her arms and sighed, “The Most High will have my wings for this…”

“Maybe,” Lailah chimed in, “But most likely not, as long as the work gets done, the Most High rarely cares how or who does it.”

Xaphine looked like she was deep in thought as her lips twisted. Lailah smiled, “Tell me General, how is Piero these days?”

Xaphine’s eyes opened wide and she glared at Lailah as though telling her to hold her tongue. Finally, she shook her head and turned to Aralyn, “You are correct, you are human, but only part. You are angelic as well…”

She paused for a moment to let out a deep sigh, “Okay, here is what I’m offering… Given the fact that our numbers were hit very hard by the war with Legion, we need all the help we can get. So I can’t just let you stay here full time, but as you are part human, you may spend part of your time here, and the rest of your time with us… let’s make it an even six months a piece. You may break that time up however you see fit; six months here, six months in our world or a week in our world and a week here. Frankly, I don’t care as long as your obligations are fulfilled.”

“It’s a high price,” Roselyn added, “But it is fair.”

Xaphine nodded, “There is one downside however… you have to spend the first six months with us. You need to get used to being in both worlds, which takes considerable training.”

Aralyn lowered her eyes, “Must it be this way?”

Xaphine’s lips twisted, “I know it seems unfair, but it’s the only way I’ll be able to convince the Most High to allow this.”

“I understand,” Aralyn replied, “Thank you, Xaphine. I know what you’ve done may cause you trouble. I appreciate you going out on a limb for me.”

Xaphine smiled, “You aren’t the only one who chose to mate with a human. Trust me, I understand better than think.”

“May I have a moment to say goodbye,” Aralyn asked.

“Take your time,” Xaphine replied, “There is no rush, you’ve earned this much.”

She turned to face Baltazar and stepped toward him. As she passed by Lailah, she smiled, “Thank you for everything… I don’t know where I’d be right now without your help.”

“You would have done just fine,” Lailah replied, “Of that, I am certain. For what it’s worth, I would have made the same decision you did about staying here.”

Aralyn nodded, “Thanks for that… just seeing Xaphine’s reaction made me worry that I was being selfish. I hope I made the right choice.”

“After everything you went through,” Lailah replied, “You’ve earned the right to be a little selfish.”

“But how do I know I’m doing the right thing,” Aralyn asked.

“Trust your heart,” Lailah replied, “Let destiny decide what’s right.”

Aralyn smiled and nodded, “I will.”

She turned and continued to Baltazar, his face had lost all of its color and a look of sadness had become apparent. Aralyn smiled, “Please don’t look at me like that. I love you, more than anything else in this world… I love you.”

“I love you,” Baltazar replied, “But this is so unfair, after everything you’ve been through.”

“I know,” she replied, “But it’s only six months, we’ll make it work.”

Baltazar looked away with a dismal expression. Aralyn looked at her love with worry in her eyes, “Won’t we? Baltazar, can we not make half of the time work until you join me above the clouds?”

Baltazar looked into her beautiful blue eyes, “Yes… yes we can. I’m sorry, Aralyn. It just seems like we’re once again asked to pay a heavy price for victory. I mean, we literally saved the world.”

“Yes we did,” Aralyn replied, “And we’re going to keep saving it.”

“How,” Baltazar asked.

Xaphine stepped forward, “The Spanish Empire has only begun to realize the effect piracy will have on their interests. Eventually, their numbers will dwindle, and their holds in the Caribbean will be fighting for freedom. Within the next two hundred years, Spain’s power will be gone and they will be no threat to anyone anymore. The powers of England, France, and the like will rise to end the Spanish oppression… and the Habsburgs will cease to exist.”

Baltazar smiled, “Then I will continue going after their ships.”

“And I will be by your side,” Aralyn replied, “Either in spirit, or by healing your crew when they are injured.”

“Yes,” Baltazar said softly, “We’ll save the world together.”

Xaphine cleared her throat to get Aralyn’s attention, “It’s time…”

Aralyn threw her arms around Baltazar, “I love you… I promise you we’ll see each other in six months, okay?”

Baltazar nodded, “Where should we meet?”

“Here,” She replied as her body began to face, “Six months from today, meet me here, I’ll be waiting for you!”

The other angels also began to fade. Baltazar turned to Lailah, “It was nice knowing you.”

Lailah nodded, “The pleasure was mine, we’ll see each other again someday, count on it.”

Baltazar smiled and watched as his love disappeared. Just before she completely vanished, a tear fell from her eye and landed on the dock. It splashed and formed into a small golden feather. Baltazar picked it up and put it in his pocket. Morgan placed his hand on Baltazar’s shoulder, “Ye okay Captain?”

“Yes, “Baltazar replied, “I’ll be fine…”

He took a deep breath and turned to face his men, “Come on boys, we’ve got six months of work to do before we can come back here! To the Black Vengeance, sail for Spain, and pirate glory!”

Gilles and Morgan saluted and headed for the boat, “Aye sir!”

Aftermath

Six months had passed for Aralyn, just as she was promised it would. When she was ready to return to Earth, there was a flicker of light and she appeared in front of the Patrisi home. Her wings were gone to help her pass as a human without incident, but her eyes were still glowing. The light blurred her eyes and made it impossible for her to see anything. She rubbed quickly trying to clear her vision.

When it finally returned, she let out a disappointed sigh. The Black Vengeance was nowhere in sight. Would he have abandoned me? She thought to herself, no, he wouldn’t do such a thing.

As though answering her question, a ship appeared from the other side of the harbor. Her sails veiled in a red sunset, Aralyn could tell that her love had finally arrived. The ship gracefully slowed to a halt as the sails were drawn and the anchored was dropped. She waited patiently as the longboat was lowered and began rowing for the shore. Anticipation built up inside of her as she waited for it to touch the shore.

The Sun slowly disappeared but the lamps all along the house took over illuminating the beach as the boat approached. Once it was within a few feet of the beach, Baltazar jumped over the side and ran through the wave to her. Aralyn ran down the beach to meet him half way, but she ran faster than he could. The two came together just a foot into the surf. They held each other tightly as the waves gently caressed their feet.

Gilles and Morgan pulled the boat up on land and watched from a few feet away. Aralyn released Baltazar from her grip, “My love… I have missed you.”

“And I missed you,” Baltazar replied.

The two brought their faces together and their lips connected in a deep kiss. Suddenly, four stars overheard began to twinkle brightly and colorful explosions went off in the night sky. All four of them turned to watch as the sky became illuminated in green, blue, red, and yellow colors. Baltazar smiled, “It’s amazing…”

“My sisters,” Aralyn replied, “I should have guessed they’d pull something like this.”

“Did you find all the answers you were looking for up there?” Baltazar asked.

Aralyn nodded, “Yes… I got to speak to Adaline, Giovanni… and my parents.”

Baltazar pressed her closer, “How are they?”

“They’re all happy…” Aralyn replied as she bit her lip. That’s what matters most. Although I should warn you, my father is very suspicious of you.”

“Is that so,” Baltazar chuckled, “Well I’ll just have to work even harder to prove my love for you.”

“That I would love to see,” Aralyn said laughing.

Suddenly, Baltazar pulled a beautiful jeweled necklace with a massive pearl on the end of it from his pocket. Aralyn gasped and placed a hand on over her mouth, “Baltazar… It’s beautiful…”

“Aztec,” he replied, “It was on its way to Spain from the new world. I… liberated it for you.”

“You are a pirate aren’t you?” Aralyn said jokingly.

“Among many other things,” Baltazar replied.

He quickly placed the necklace on her and rubbed her shoulders. She placed her right hand on his left one, “I can’t wait for us to start our life together.”

“It should be quite an adventure.” Baltazar replied.

“Really,” Aralyn asked, “I thought our big adventure was over. All the loose ends have been tied up.”

“Never,” Baltazar insisted, “All life can be an adventure if we choose to make it so.”

A look of excitement came over Aralyn’s face, “Yes, then let’s make it one.”

Destiny: Divinity’s Finale, Book 6, Chapter 7

VII

As Gilles predicted, the wind carried them to Venice in less than a week. No one onboard could explain such good fortune. Whenever they altered course, it almost appeared as though the wind was going with them. It blew through the sails hard enough to test the limits of the ship’s speed, but never enough to damage it. Lailah suspected that someone was aiding them on their journey.

Baltazar spent most of the time in his cabin with Aralyn. She had been badly injured and had not yet awakened. The bruises and cuts all over her body were slowly healing, but Baltazar worried about what damage was below the surface that he could not see. Lailah also peeked in from time to time to make sure that she was okay. She inspected Aralyn’s injuries to make sure she was healing properly.

On more than one occasion, Baltazar would turn to Lailah with a worried look, “Why won’t she wake up, what happened to her?”

“She’s fine Baltazar,” Lailah replied in a reassuring tone, “Aralyn poured everything she had into the fight, including her own life energy.”

“Her own life energy?” Baltazar repeated, confused.

“Every living creature has life energy,” she replied, “Angels have the ability to draw upon theirs for strength is they ever need it in a stressful situation. Aralyn used a great deal of hers and it is going to take time to replenish it.”

Baltazar straightened her hair as she slept, “What happens if an angel uses too much of it?”

Lailah frowned, “Then they wither away and die, but that isn’t what’s happening here, trust me.”

Baltazar shook his head and held on to her as tightly as he could. When Lailah was gone, he whispered in her ear, “I’ll make a deal with you; you wake up, and I’ll take you anywhere you want to go. How does that sound?”

Of course, he got no response, but he still waited a moment before speaking again, “Well… take some time to think about it.”

**

Another day went by before Venice came into view. With Lailah’s help, they were able to find the Patrisi residence within a few hours of sighting the city. As the ship sailed on, the crew could not believe their eyes. The old pier had been repaired, the shipwreck had been pulled from the rocks and was now a seaworthy boat docked on the pier, and the house had been completely rebuilt.

Baltazar could not believe his eyes, “What happened here?”

Lailah smiled, “Thank your love for this.”

“What do you mean?” Baltazar asked.

“Do you remember the when she raised the Black Vengeance from the ocean floor after the French sank her?” Lailah replied, “Her powers went out of control and went about reversing everything that Legion had done as well. Mont Saint Michel has been restored, and so has the Patrisi home.”

Baltazar looked around in shock, “This is amazing, it’s like the place we visited never existed… how is this possible.”

Lailah shrugged, “That’s what we don’t know. No angel has the ability to do all this. I suspect that when her powers finally flowed to the surface, she unconsciously ordered them to do the things she desired most, but this is only my theory.”

Baltazar nodded as he grabbed his spyglass. Looking through it, he could see that the house was deserted. Multiple footsteps on the ground made it evident that someone had been investigating the rebuilt home recently, but other then that, there was no evidence of disturbance.

Baltazar lowered the spyglass and turned to Morgan, “This is as good a place as any to make berth. Assign a lookout detail and grant shore leave to the rest of the men.”

Morgan saluted and turned to the crew, “Drop anchor, and lower the longboat for the captain.”

The red sails were folded against the yardarms and the anchor hit the water. Within moments, the ship came to a stop. The longboat went into the water and Morgan climbed down to inspect the boat. After a few minutes, he looked back up to the deck, “Longboat ready Captain.”

Baltazar nodded, “Take over up here.”

As he turned and headed to the cabin, he turned to Gilles, “Into the longboat with you. Take Lailah as well. I’ll join you in a few moments.”

Gilles saluted, “Aye sir.”

Baltazar disappeared into the cabin and sat down on the bed next to Aralyn. He leaned over her and gently whispered in her ear, “You’re home, Aralyn. It’s out there waiting for you. I’ll take you there so you can wake up in your own home.”

Carefully, Baltazar ran his hands under her back and legs and lifted her off the bed. He made his way back out on deck and over to the longboat. Before he climbed down, Baltazar handed Aralyn to Lailah, who sat down and rested Aralyn’s head on her lap. Baltazar then climbed down into the boat and manned one of the oars. Gilles took the other one and they began to row ashore.

As the boat pulled away from the Black Vengeance, Baltazar yelled back, “Organize shore party and see to it that the men get their shore leave.”

“I’ll take care of it,” Morgan yelled back, “Don’t you worry, you’ll have a well rested crew, sir. You just worry about getting Aralyn better. We’re going to need a good nurse where we’re going after she wakes up.”

Everyone onboard laughed as the boat pulled away. Baltazar smiled and saluted. Baltazar and Gilles rowed towards the shore as quickly as they could. Unlike the last time they had shown up at this house, the sea was very calm and quite. It was only a few minutes before the boat grazed the rocks underneath her.

Gilles and Baltazar jumped out and pulled the boat up on land. Gilles looked around and nodded, “This be eerie, everything fixed as though nothing happened in the first place.”

Baltazar nodded, “Perhaps that is for the best. Better the world not remember Legion and what he did.”

“Very true,” Lailah replied, “Something so evil could stir the minds of man even after it has been destroyed.”

Baltazar turned to Gilles, “Check out the house, make sure it’s secure.”

Giles nodded, “You got it Captain.”

Lailah looked up at the second floor, “I’ll check up there.”

She spread her wings and flew up looking into each window, inspecting the rooms, “This is incredible… everything exactly as it was the day Aralyn was born. Nothing at all has been altered.”

Gilles opened the front door with his pistol drawn and began to look around. The house was fully furnished and clean. It actually seemed quite welcoming. He walked through the rooms on the bottom floor without finding anyone and returned to the entrance. He picked up a torch that was leaning behind the door next to, of all things, an old arquebus.

Gilles pulled some gunpowder out of his pouch, sprinkled it on some cloth and wrapped the cloth on the torch. Once it was ready, he unloaded his pistol, held the flintlock of the pistol against the rags and pulled the trigger. The spark ignited the torch which then burst into flame. He lit the lamps on either side of the door and at each end of the house as the sun began to go down. Once they were done, he went inside the house and began lighting the lamps inside as well. Finally, he got to the fireplace and lit the fire there, which illuminated the kitchen.

Once everything was lit, Gilles returned to the front door once more, “Captain, the house is secured.”

Baltazar watched from the outside as the beautiful house came to life. The sky began to get dark and the stars appeared overhead. Lailah landed next to Baltazar as he picked up Aralyn. She looked up at two unusually bright stars in the sky, “Why hello, my sisters. What brings you here?”

Baltazar looked at her oddly, “Who are you talking to?”

Lailah continued to watch the stars as she responded, “My sisters Ariel and Roselyn. They’ve been watching this home since one of their sisters lived here.”

“You mean Adaline,” Baltazar replied.

Lailah nodded, “Her circle grew quite fond of this area, even after her death and continued to watch over the Patrisi family.”

Baltazar sighed, “A lot of good it did them.”

“Yes…” Lailah said softly, “Unfortunately no angel was really a match for Legion, so our options were limited.”

Baltazar brought Aralyn inside, took her up to the second floor, and laid her in a comfortable bed that looked like it had just been slept in a few hours ago. Lailah’s lips twisted, “The last person to lay there was Aralyn’s mother, when she gave birth.”

Baltazar watched as Aralyn slowly began moving and pulled the blankets up around herself. He smiled, “I think we’d best leave her alone.”

The two of them retreated from the room. Lailah sat on the front stoop outside watching the stars as Baltazar claimed a small cot on the first floor. Gilles went poking through the kitchen for food and found the house fully stocked with preserved supplies. Given the age of the house, he wasn’t sure how good they’d be, but he was starving and decided that it was worth the risk.

Baltazar sat back against the cot and began to fall asleep. He looked around once more and thought about the life that Aralyn had been robbed of. Would she have been better off if she were raised here with loving parents instead of the cold trappings of an ancient abbey? The answer was obvious; of course she would have been better off, anyone would have been.

Baltazar thought back to his own family. The mother who loved him and the father who had cast him out and refused to even admit he existed. It filled him with a great deal of resentment. Inside, he couldn’t wait for Aralyn to be well again so that they could get back to plundering his family’s ships. Baltazar’s head once again filled with fame and fortune as he drifted off to sleep and dreamt of easier times.

Destiny: Divinity’s Finale, Book 6, Chapter 6

VI

Lailah’s wings were extremely sore almost to the point of paralysis. Even a slight flap to keep herself level was agonizing. She struggled to stay airborne, not wanting to crash into the water. In her thousands of years, she had never learned how to swim, and doubted even the best swimmer would fair well in harsh seas with another person as dead weight.

Gilles saw her coming in. At first, he was relieved, but then he saw her erratic flying and the fact that she was not slowing down. His eyes widened as she got closer, “Men, clear the deck, look out!”

Lailah flew over the port side, dropping Aralyn’s body before crashing down herself. Gilles grabbed Aralyn and handed her to two nearby crewmen, “Get her into the cabin, make sure she is comfortable.”

The two crewmen picked her up and did as Gilles had ordered. As they disappeared from sight, Lailah hit the deck hard and rolled a couple of times until she was able to use her wings to stop herself. She lay on the deck for a few moments, badly hurt, but still conscious. Then she remembered that Baltazar was still in Paeles waiting for her.

Lailah quickly stood up, took a moment to regain her balance, and tried to spread her wings to fly back to the ruins. She began flapping and tried to run, but her legs gave out underneath her. She tried a second time, but Gilles grabbed her, “Sorry lass, I don’t think ye’ll be flying again for a while.”

“I have to,” she insisted, “Baltazar is still over there!”

Gilles quickly turned back to look at Paeles, “The captain didn’t make it out?”

“He’s still waiting for me,” Lailah yelled with tears in her eyes, “I promised him I’d come back for him. I have to go!”

Morgan looked out toward Paeles as the massive whirlwinds sucked in what was left of the city. Whole buildings had been ripped from their foundation and were now spinning in the air as they broke apart. He frowned and shook his head, “Don’t think there be anyone left for you to be keeping that promise to lass… that I don’t.”

Lailah watched helplessly as the whirlwind turned the entire area into a crater. Gilles crossed himself, “Captain…”

Tears streamed down Lailah’s cheeks, “This isn’t right. He did so much for us… too much to allow him to die this. I promised him…”

“You did everything you could,” Morgan replied, “I’m sure he doesn’t blame you. You managed to get Aralyn back here safely.”

Morgan nodded, “Aye, we’ll miss the Captain dearly, he be the best man I ever did serve under, but he loved Aralyn, and she was what was important.”

“I couldn’t agree more,” A familiar voice piped in from behind, “But then again, enough people Aralyn loves have already been lost to us. For her to accept another loss would be too much to ask.”

The entire crew looked in disbelief as a waterlogged Baltazar De La Fuente climbed over the railing on the starboard side. Gilles smiled, “Captain!”

“But how,” Lailah asked in disbelief, “I left you in the middle of the city, how were you able to escape so quickly?”

Baltazar shrugged, “Demonic creatures, haunted cities, massive whirlwinds… and even the devious mind of one Aralyn Patrisi are nothing I cannot find a way to overcome.”

Lailah chuckled a little, but still frowned, “I’m sorry Baltazar, I told you I’d come back and I didn’t.”

“It’s okay Lailah,” Baltazar replied, “I saw the way the city was collapsing around me. I knew when I handed Aralyn to you that there was no way you were going to be able to keep that promise.”

Morgan cheered, “We all should have known better! He’s Captain del la Fuente, nothing can kill him!”

Baltazar turned to Lailah, “How is Aralyn?”

“She’s fine,” Lailah replied, “She hasn’t regained consciousness, last I had seen, but she is resting comfortably in the cabin.”

As a look of relief came over Baltazar’s face, Lailah smiled, “Don’t worry, your love is much more durable than you think.”

“I know,” Baltazar replied, “In many ways, more durable than anyone I’ve ever seen.”

As the crew celebrated their captain’s return with cheers of joy, Baltazar inspected his ship now that the battle was over. There were burn marks everywhere, much of the deck railing was gone, and even a few cannons had been turned over. There was even a large hole in the deck, and one of the cabin windows has been shattered. To Baltazar’s surprise, the sails were still intact, but they were pretty much the only part of this once proud ship that had remained intact.

Baltazar shook his head and glared at his crew, “Mr. Gilles, where are you?”

Gilles stepped out of the crowd of cheering crew with a nervous look on his face, “Captain?”

Baltazar had an angry look on his face, “Mr. Gilles I did give you an order to take care of this ship did I not?”

Gilles gulped, “Yes sir…”

“Excuse me, Captain,” Morgan interjected, “But Gilles did the best he could under the circumstances…”

“I don’t believe I asked for your opinion, Mr. Morgan.” Baltazar replied.

Morgan nodded apologetically, “Aye Captain…”

“Now, Mr. Gilles,” Baltazar turned his attention back to his first mate, “What do you have to say for yourself? The condition of this ship is absolutely deplorable!”

Gilles nodded, “Aye sir, I know… I did my best, but we were under heavy fire from our enemies.”

“I see.” Baltazar replied thoughtfully, “So in other words it could have been a lot worse?”

“Aye that be true,” Gilles replied.

“So then what you are saying is that you actually did a really good job under the circumstances and because of your fine work, the Black Vengeance lives to sail another day… is that what you’re saying, Mr. Gilles?” Baltazar demanded.

“Well I wouldn’t be putting it quite that way sir,” Gilles replied, “The entire crew played a part in this adventure and I be saying that because of all of our efforts, the ship was saved.”

Baltazar’s eyes looked even more enraged, “Mr. Gilles, are you now blaming the rest of the crew for this mess?”

Gilles shrugged, “Well Captain, I…”

“I should grant you all shore leave!” Baltazar yelled, “Yes, I think a few weeks of shore leave along with pain of booze and wenches should teach you a lesson about ever doing such a good job of keeping my ship afloat again! What do you think?”

Gilles scratched his head with a confused look, “Captain?”

“In fact,” Baltazar said, turning to his crew with a nearly enraged look, “Shore leave for all of you men, just to show you how much I appreciate your hard work.”

The men looked at each other not sure what to make of Baltazar’s words. After a few moments, Baltazar’s expression changed from an angry scowl to an overjoyed smile, “You men did very well today and I am very proud to be serving with the lot of you. Because of your sacrifices, Aralyn is finally safe, Legion has been defeated, and now life can finally go on!”

Baltazar turned back to Gilles, “Mr. Gilles, set course for Venice… get us to the old Patrisi residence. Once we’re there, let’s partake of the beautiful Venetian countryside before we get to work repairing the ship.”

Gilles nodded, “Venice, very good Captain!”

“Captain,” Morgan piped up from behind, “What about after the Black Vengeance be repaired?”

Baltazar looked at every crewman and smiled widely, “Then it’ll back to plundering Spanish ships!”

The entire crew cheered even louder than before as the captain crossed his arms and smiled, “On deck you worthless rats, all watches, prepare to make way, shorten and cable. Men to the yards, aloft with you! Set topsails, hands to the braces, weigh anchor, let fall the sails!”

The men scattered to follow their captain’s orders. Within minutes, the sails came down as the anchor began to break the surface. The ship slowly began to move forward as Baltazar watched from the aft castle. He took one last look at the barren area where the ruins of Paeles once stood before turning to Gilles, “Five degrees starboard then hold your course, Mr. Gilles.”

Gilles nodded, “No problem, Captain.”

“Mr. Morgan,” Baltazar called out to the main deck as the wheel began to turn, “Full sail, if you please!”

“Aye sir,” Morgan replied and turned to the men who were still aloft, “You men, full sail, get the lead out!”

The remaining sails came down and the ship picked up speed. Baltazar nodded, “Let’s get to Venetian waters.”

Gilles smiled, “Aye sir, as long as the winds hold out, it shouldn’t take too long.”
