Review of Inspiration #Writing #Author #Advice

So… The Endless Forms Most Beautiful…

I usually don’t do reviews… unless something really annoys me and I need to vent, but this album left me a little vexed.

I love Nightwish. They’ve been around forever, they put on an AMAZING show, and they have a huge body of work that includes serious music as well as lighthearted stuff. ‘Dark Chest of Wonders’ is still one of my favorite songs.

As much as I hate to say this, but the band appeared to be in a state of decline. Parting ways with Tarja was a pretty bad hit, but then they went through a series of guest singers… including Elise Ryd, before settling on Annette Olzen. It was at this point that I simply couldn’t go see them live anymore. Annette was simply a poor choice as a replacement as she was barely able to sing many of Tarja’s songs. Now I know there is a huge debate on pretty much every Nightwish YouTube video on who was the better singer.

‘Anette is a pop princess who isn’t a good metal singer and she has a weak voice.’

‘Tarja was a mediocre opera singer who had run her course and was too difficult to deal with.’

Fine, whatever. I really don’t care about that debate. Regardless of which singer you think was better, I’d like to make two points;

  1. Anette can’t sing Tarja’s songs well. Not in the least:
  2. Dark Passion Play was a departure from their old style and really updated the band, bringing in a new audience and was an amazing album.

So regardless of whether you like either singer, it happened and there’s nothing that anyone can do about it.

Anyway… on point, when I found out that Nightwish was picking up Floor Jansen, I was excited. I followed her work with ReVamp and was a fan. Then Showtime Storytime came out…

Hearing her belt out that last line sent chills down my spine. I now listen to this version of DCOW over the Tarja version. Floor was a great direction for Nightwish. Her style brings back the Tarja crowd while still keeping the Anette fans happy. In essence, she’s a happy medium between the two styles.

So needless to say… I had great anticipation about Nightwish’s next album. The singles came out first. Elan was great and so was the title song. I couldn’t wait to get my hand on the album and listen to it all the way through.
I got that opportunity this morning after it arrived in the mail. I popped it in and the usual mystic-style intro came on. Then one by one I listened to the songs… and my reactions was… meh?

I won’t say that the other songs on the album were terrible, but they weren’t really anything impressive either. Nightwish Albums usually have two or three non-singles that are pretty good and that’s what I usually grab the album for. This… this album had NONE of that.

So is it a terrible album? Well… not really… I mean the two singles are good, the intro song is fine, the music well done and of course Floor Jansen is a lot of fun… but the songs themselves really didn’t jive with me. They’re the songs on an album you let play when you’re not really paying attention and don’t care.

Is it their worst album? NO! Imaginarium still holds that one… seriously, there’s barely a single song on that CD worth listening to. It’s the one Nightwish Album that I refuse to purchase.

So what went wrong? Well… you can attribute many things to this… for starters they recruited a flutist into their ranks who had played with them previously, but was never an official member, second they were just starting out with Floor, but I don’t find the latter to be an excuse. Bands change singers all the time and do just fine:
Dragonforce
Kamelot
Arch Enemy
etc.

Unfortunately, the blame must inevitably lie with Tuomos. What he was attempting to do was a pretty big departure from the style that made the band famous, and while they’ve altered their style slightly in the past, they’ve always kept it within the Realm of Symphonic Metal. This album strikes me far more as Folk Metal, which is really easy to screw up. Symphonic melodies and metal almost go hand in hand, but folk is an almost totally different form of music all together with different themes and different styles. In the end, the songs he composed. while ambitious, fell flat on his face.

So is the album worth a listen? Absolutely. Is it worth the $10 purchase price? Eh… not really, no.

Just remember, this is my personal opinion.  If you like the album, no problem. I can understand why someone would, but to me, it’s a rough draft on something great that Nightwish has in store for us. We’ll just have to wait a few years for their next album.

Destiny: Divinity’s Finale, Book 4, Chapter 2

II

Melisande and the group returned to the Black Vengeance. Worn out, she took to the cabin and closed the door. More than anything at that moment, she just wanted to be alone.

Baltazar watched her and shook his head, “Poor girl, this just doesn’t seem right somehow. We came all this way just to discover that her family had been horribly murdered, it’s not fair.”

“Aye,” Morgan agreed, “but she knew the risks, sometimes when ye go searching for answers, ye find out things ye may not be wanting to know.”

“Too true, my friend.” Baltazar sighed.

Gilles turned from the wheel to face Baltazar, “Captain, we’re ready to move out. Would we be heading back to Spanish waters?”

“Nay,” Baltazar replied, “our mission here isn’t complete. We’ve uncovered some of the mystery, but there are still pieces missing.”

Baltazar took one last look at the old Patrisi home and turned back to his crew, “Take us out of this cove and then steer us a course directly south. We make for Night Island.”

Gilles shuddered at the name, “But Captain, you heard what the fisherman said about that place.”

“Yes I remember,” he replied, “but I think that there might be more to the story then simply a creature going insane and living there in solitude. Carry out your orders, Mr. Gilles.”

“Aye Captain,” Gilles replied hesitantly.

It took a few minutes, but the crew managed to get the sails down quickly. The ship slowly pulled out of the cove back into Laguna Veneta. They sailed south for about an hour until they reached Night Island.

A large black cloud hovered over the island that was little more than a jagged rock formation protruding from the ocean. Baltazar nodded when they got close enough to lower the boat, “This is as close as we go, I don’t know how deep the water is around that island, and I don’t intend on finding out the hard way. Drop anchor and lower the longboat.”

As the crew ran to carry out his orders, Baltazar made his way to the cabin. He slowly knocked on the door, before opening it. Melisande looked up from her tear soaked pillow, “Yes?”

“We’ve arrived at Night Island.” Baltazar replied, hesitantly. “Are you sure that you want to do this?”

Melisande nodded, “Whatever that creature is, it either knows about what happened to my family, or it is responsible for their deaths. I have to go.”

Baltazar nodded and stood aside so she could walk out on deck, “As you wish.”

Within minutes, Baltazar and his three friends were back in the longboat. This time, Melisande had one of her family’s swords with her. Baltazar still didn’t understand their significance or why she insisted on carrying worn out old weapons, but they made her feel safer, so he didn’t question it. The boat pulled away from the Black Vengeance as Morgan and Baltazar rowed for the shore.

Melisande sat at the front of the boat, staring transfixed at the island. Baltazar kept one eye on her as best he could while he tended to his oar, “You’re not going to fall overboard again on me are you?”

“No.” She replied softly. “I’m sorry about that… but this time, I’m full aware of my surroundings, that won’t happen again.”

Baltazar nodded as he kept rowing. Though he trusted her word, he couldn’t help but keep one eye on her, knowing that there were still circumstances beyond her control. He was still trying to figure out what he’d see in Melisande’s eye when she collapsed at her family’s home.

Finally, the boat struck solid rock. Baltazar and Morgan jumped out and pulled it onto the rocky beach. Melisande jumped out and began having the flashbacks again. This time, she heard agonizing screams coming from a single person.

Just as before, the voice was familiar to her. Then there was a flash of charred feathers and crystal tears. Melisande gasped as she opened her eyes. Baltazar grabbed her in case she was about to fall, “Again?”

Melisande nodded, “Yes… but it’s different…”

“How so?” He asked.

“I can’t explain it,” she replied, “but I don’t think we’re dealing with any ordinary creature here.”

Baltazar nodded, “Be on your guard all the same.”

She grinned as she rested her sword against her shoulder, “Worried about me?”

“Always.” Baltazar replied.

She smiled, “Just stay close to me.”

Papi and Morgan joined them and began climbing the rocky hill. The cloud overhead choked out all sunlight. Small stones rolled down the rocky cliff causing nearby formations to collapse as the group continued higher.

As they reached the dark cloud, Melisande discovered the entrance to a massive cave overlooking the island. The darkness had shrouded it from the view of any passing ship. No one would be able to tell what was there.

Baltazar grabbed a pistol from his belt while Morgan pulled a pair of short cutlasses off of his back. Once everyone was ready, Baltazar beckoned them forward, “All right men, be on your guard. After what we’ve seen, anything could be in here, and I mean anything.”

Melisande brought her sword close to her chest as she kept up with the group. The sound of deep, hollow breathing could be heard from the back of the cave. Skeletons of birds, rats, and other small animals littered the cave floor.

Melisande grimaced at the thought of eating something like that. Suddenly, a high pitched scream came from the back of the cave. It almost deafened the group as they continued walking and they were forced to cover their ears.

Baltazar shook his head, “I’d say it’s fair to assume that whatever lies ahead, already knows we’re here.”

Chills traveled down Melisande’s back as she took a few more cautious steps forward, “That scream… I heard it in one of my visions…”

The blade in Melisande’s hand began to pulse. What everyone thought was dark tarnish stains on the blade glowed green with every pulse. Melisande moved to the head of the group and pushed on deeper into the darkness, “Something tells me that we’re going to need this sword.

As it became too dark to see, Baltazar pulled a second, unloaded, pistol from his belt, grabbed a large stick off the ground, and wrapped it in cloth. Once he was done, he added a small amount of black powder, and used the flint on the pistol to ignite it.

There was a small spark and a flame followed that lit up the whole cave. Melisande turned to him as a horrified look came over her, “Baltazar watch out!”

Something with red eyes was standing right next to him. As he turned to his side, the creature screamed and took flight. Startled, Baltazar fell on his back. He gripped his pistol and fired it at the creature, missing by only a few inches, “To arms, everyone, defend yourselves!”

The creature danced around on the ceiling for a few minutes. It almost sounded like a woman laughing as it darted back and forth, dodging the shots fired at it. Finally, when the group had fired every pistol and was trying to reload, the creature jumped down from the ceiling and landed in front of Melisande.

Frightened, Melisande brandished her sword and pointed it directly at the creature. As she thrust it forward, the blade glowed bright green in color, “Back you demon, you’re not hurting anyone!”

The creature fell back, startled, “H… how… how…”

It seemed as though she was struggling to remember how to speak, “How d… do you…”

Melisande narrowed her eyes, “What?”

Finally, it came to her, “How do you come to own that sword?”

Melisande clenched her jaw, “This sword belonged to my parents, demon! Mama and Papa Patrisi, you know that. You killed them long ago!”

“Demon?” The creature scoffed in an enraged tone. “I am no demon, and I did not kill anyone!”

Melisande clenched her jaw, “How can I believe you? Your screams were there the night my parents died. I heard them in my visions! I saw you!”

The creature frowned, “Think girl, and look at me. Do I look like any demon that you’ve heard of?”

“I don’t know what a demon is supposed to look like.” Melisande shot back. “All I know is that they behave the way you have!”

The creature took a deep breath and calmed down enough to speak in a more relaxed voice, “Just look at me… please.”

The green light from the blade illuminated the creature’s features. She was beautiful, but filthy. Her hair was a tangled mess and looked as though it hadn’t been tended to in years, her clothes were in no better shape, and her face was covered in dirt. Her arms, legs, and one of her cheeks were badly scarred. It looked like they had been burned at some point. The most alarming thing was her wings. They looked badly scarred and were missing feathers.

Melisande realized, she didn’t land because she wanted to, her wings couldn’t possibly keep her in the air for long. Her eyes glowed even brighter as the red flame was slowly replaced by the same blue that Melisande’s eyes had. A hurt look formed in the creatures eyes. At this point, Melisande remember some of the pictures in the bible she used to read from.

She looked at the creature for a second and realized what was addressing her, “You’re… an angel?”

“Yes.” The creature replied.

“Who are you,” Melisande asked, “and what were you doing at my family’s home?”

“The Most High named me Lailah.” The angel replied. “Tell me, what house do you claim as your family? You mentioned the Patrisis.”

“I claim no house as my own as I have never known my family.” Melisande replied. “However… my mother and father were Patrisis.”

Melisande looked down at the sword she was holding, “This sword and its sister protected generations of my family! They were given to me when I was old enough to understand and wield them.”

The creature took a step back with a look of shock in her eyes. The air in the room suddenly became a lot less heavy. Torches mounted on the walls spontaneously ignited and the entire room was illuminated in bright flame.

With the room properly illuminated, Lailah stepped forward with a look of sadness on her face as she touched Melisande’s cheek, “I don’t believe it… I always had a feeling you’d come, but I admit that I had lost faith.”

“Lailah…” Melisande repeated, “I… I know you, don’t I?”

“Yes you do.” She replied with a smile. “Child, I was there for your birth. I watched over your mother as you lay dormant in her womb and I helped bring you into the world.”

“Aralyn…” She said looking Melisande over. “I see Sister Mary did a good job looking after you. You look exactly like your great great grandmother.”

Melisande stepped back, “Aralyn… you must be mistaken. My name is Melisande.”

Lailah nodded, “That would most likely be the name that the Sister gave you to protect you from the truth, but it is no more yours than whatever history the church may have fabricated about your family.”

She placed her hand on Melisande’s shoulder, “Your name… your true name is Aralyn Patrisi. You were named as such to honor your ancestor, Adaline. Your mother and father were Cecca and Federico Patrisi. I knew them well.”

Melisande’s mouth dropped open. The missing pieces of her past were finally coming together. She needed to understand more, “Lailah, I have waited years for this. I need to know more!”

Lailah nodded, “I am sure you must have more questions than there are stars in the sky, but I can’t answer them in this wretched place. Please, take me with you. Get me off of this wretched island, and I will tell you everything you want to know.”

“Hold it.” Baltazar cut in, still not convinced. “We’re taught that the devil can appear in many forms. This creature attacked us and appeared in your mind at a very dark time. How do we know that it’s telling us the truth? How can we possibly believe this?”

Lailah sighed, “That was a survival instinct. I didn’t know who you were. Look at me, look at how I’ve had to live for the better part of two decades. How would you have responded?”

“And had you not found out who we were?” Baltazar asked in an accusing tone.

Lailah stepped forward and looked at him, “If I’d wanted to kill you, you would have been dead before you had a chance to light that torch. Unlike you, the darkness does not impede me.”

Melisande turned to Baltazar with a pleading look, “Baltazar, please. I believe her. Let’s get her out of here.”

“You’re sure?” Baltazar asked.

Melisande nodded, “Yes, it’ll be fine. You have to trust me.”

“I do trust you.” Baltazar replied, not taking his gaze away from Lailah.

Melisande nodded, “I’ll take responsibility for her. It’ll be okay.”

Baltazar sighed, “Very well… let’s go back to the ship. I want to see this whole mystery solved too.”

The group made their way back to the entrance of the cave and carefully helped each other down the hillside. They minded their footing as they made their way to the boat as a fall could be fatal on the hill.

Melisande was anxious to get Lailah back aboard the Black Vengeance. She helped the angel into the boat and climbed in behind her. The three men pushed the boat into the water and climbed in as well.

It was a silent and very uncomfortable trip back to the ship. No one said a word to anyone else. Melisande was guarding her tongue until she got back to the ship, Baltazar wanted to know the answers to Melisande’s past as much as she did. He was also suspicious of just how much Papi knew before they set sail on this entire voyage.

From My Writing Playlist #Writing #Author #Advice

But Jim, you HATE country!

Modern country. I hate modern country. I grew up with this one! RIP John Denver.

When to Listen: It’s a folk song, so really general playlist, but this is really an opener song for me. Like when you’re describing the landscape before whatever the adversary is damages it.

The Devil in the Pages: How to Play Devils Advocate #Writing #Author #Advice

Hi Jim,

I saw that you give out writing advice and was hoping you could help me. See I’m taking my first shot at writing a political satire story, but am finding it increasingly difficult to write from the perspective of someone I don’t agree with. It’s getting very hard to write without sounding superficial or condescending. Do you have any suggestions?

Best-
Maria

Hi Maria,

That’s a good question and one that isn’t always easy to answer. As human beings, we all have preferences, beliefs, biases, and worldviews that are specific to us. Many of our core values and beliefs are deeply integrated into our personalities and often very difficult, if not impossible to change.

So with that in mind, how do we work through them. How do we betray our own senses and beliefs and become the devil’s advocate?
The way I see it, there are a few ways…
1. Get involved in debates. On my private facebook profile, I’ll often post a political question or issue based either on current events or something I’m writing about. My friends list is full of people from both sides of the isle… some more mature than others. Most of the time, I’ll get a couple of troll posts, as well as childish name-calling going back ad forth. However, then one or two people who are looking to have a ‘drop the mic’ moment come in with an intellectually sound, cited argument. Reading through these arguments can often give you the answer you’re looking for whether you agree with them or not.

2. Have someone else write it. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with collaborating on a work with another person if you’re completely stumped. Just make sure that this other person has the maturity to post their views without going into attack mode.

3. Do a little soul-searching. This is something I typically do when I debate points. I come up with my argument and then carefully examine it to see where someone could poke a hole in it or use a piece of their own logic to refute it. In that way, you start thinking as they do and very quickly, you can form a cohesive argument.

Remember though, just because you’re writing it, doesn’t mean you agree with it. There is such a thing as playing devil advocate and its a perfectly reasonable thing to do in order to get a point across.

I remember back in college, trying to write a short story from a German soldier’s perspective during WW2. My goal was to have the soldier condemn what Hitler did, but defend WHY Germany let him come to power in the first place. This soldier wasn’t supposed to be the moral or ethical right, but I at least wanted people to know that perspective in order to gain a bigger understanding of the context behind World War 2. In the end, the soldier would be executed following the Nuremberg trials.

Well… I live in the United States. All of the known Nazis have long since been deported. Any that could still be left are likely either dead or in hiding. However… their children and grandchildren remained. Most didn’t want to talk about it, but a few were able to give me some insight into the how and why that we aren’t really taught in school.

So I was able to find some information that helped me make a decent argument.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

Vampires Suck!?!? #Writing #Author #Advice

First there was high fantasy… elves, dwarves, orcs, goblins, and the race of man… people saw it and were pleased. (1970s)
Then came the aliens craze, starting with horror, and moving into action and urban fantasy. People saw it and were pleased… (Late 70s-1980s)
Then came angels. They were sensitive, romantic, and powerful. Drama lovers saw it and were pleased. (1990s)
Now… well…

So as many of my followers know, I’ve been trying to find a new fantasy to read. My writing has regrettably dried up a little recently, so I’ve tried to turn my attention back to reading and hopefully give the creativity engine a little time to refuel. So I decided to trek out to Barnes and Noble with a gift card that I’d received for Christmas. I spent quite a while trying to figure out what to do with it as I don’t do much reading (admittedly), but I was determined to find something.

Well I failed…

Let me preface the next part by saying that I can’t STAND the vampire craze. I don’t even really consider it a vampire craze per se, especially given some of the more recent… euphemistically phrased ‘interpretations’ of that fantasy species.

In the beginning, I thought that the entry into dark fantasy would be a good thing. The angel craze of the 90s was all but dead, the marvel explosion was in its infancy, and everyone was looking for a new focus. Vampires were cool, and at first, the Vampire craze lived up to that. The Underworld series was enduring, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was awesome (until the last few seasons), and Blade is to date one of the best action movies I’ve ever seen… but then sh^t got weird.

With the complete bombing of movies like the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Van Helsing, it looked like the Vampire craze was to be short-lived… then Twilight came out… I saw the movie in theaters (and I still miss the $9 I spent), and I hated it, but I thought… ‘Okay, maybe this is just a one-time thing but it’ll give new life to the craze…

Well… it did, but not in the way anyone who had previously liked vampires wanted it to. Soon, new interpretations of Vampires came about. Suddenly vampires were no longer the unholy horrors most of us fantasy gurus grew up with. They were sensitive, sparkly, pale creatures hiding in plain sight. They had become sex symbols (True Blood), leaving the rest of us going… WHAT THE F***!?

But I digress…

I went to the book store to pick something up, being the old school, hard-copy, guy I am. I immediately hit the Sci-Fi/Fantasy section and… ugh… There was one huge section of Game of Thrones, one huge section of all things Tolkien, and then shelf after shelf of Vampire books! Yes, there was the occasional dragon vs. knight, pirate, viking, or other misc fantasy in the mix, but for the most part, it was all vampires! Every book had the cover of either a sexualized women licking her lips with blood flowing, or a metro-sexual male with his fangs hanging out in a tux with either a gun or a sword.

It doesn’t end there either… vampires have invaded comic books, including series that have NOTHING to do with that sort of fantasy, video games have upped the anti on this. Heck, even high fantasy seems to have accepted both the werewolf and vampire species into their mix of human/elf/dwarf casts.

Speculation was that, with the release of series like the Hunger Games, that the Vampire Craze was going to give way to the strong female lead in a Post-Apocalyptic World Craze, and while that style of fantasy still seems to have a pretty strong following, it now seems to be in open competition with the Vampire Craze… and given the mixed reviews of the latest set of movies… it appears that the trend which the Hunger Games started… is losing that fight.

The Vampire Craze has outlasted every other craze thus far and, despite the fact that no major motion pictures appear to be slated for release, it has found a way to sink its claws into every other medium it can.

This isn’t going away people… not any time soon at this rate…

The Ins and Outs of Publishing, A Directory of Advice. #Writing #Author #Advice

Okay, so it looks like I’m still getting a lot of publishing questions. These are recurrent questions I get on a regular basis, and while I want to try to respond to everyone who reaches out to me, I don’t want my blog becoming redundant. So I think I’m going to repost this on a weekly basis from now on to help people navigate the publishing world. I don’t really see another way around it.

So if you have questions regarding publishing, PLEASE check below to see if any of this helps you before reaching out. I’m always happy to help, but I may have already answered your question.

Publishing is a tough road to navigate. Please check out the links below. These are previous posts I’ve made about the ins and outs of publishing. They should be of assistance in your journey:

Am I Ready To Publish? This is a must read BEFORE even considering starting the process. I can’t tell you how many authors burned bridges by not being ready.

Editing… There is a Cost That Must be Paid… or is There? You can skip this one if you’ve already had your writing edited (by someone other than you!). However, I’d still recommend reading.

Getting Published… the basics… In this post, we explore traditional publishing vs. self-publishing. Here you’ll get the pros on cons of each and the steps you need to go through in order to be successful in either.

Finally…

Copyrighting my Writing. Am I Protected? This isn’t required reading… however, if you’re concerned about plagiarism, or in the future may need to file a copyright claim, I recommend giving it a read.

Feeling overwhelmed yet? I’d be surprised if you didn’t. The only sage advice I can offer you other than the documents above is simple…

  1. Do not give up. A million “No’s” suddenly become irrelevant if you get that one “yes”.
  2. People will tell you that everyone and their mother wants to publish a book. You’re up against insurmountable odds and a flooded market. This is false. You’re not up against everyone and their mother. Permit me the luxury and I’ll prove this mathematically: First of all, take the entire group of people who want to get published. Now take that number and reduce it by roughly 60%. You just eliminated all the people who want to get something published, but don’t have the time, ability, drive, or inspiration to write. Next, eliminate another 20%. You’ve now taken down all the people who can put pen to paper but can’t afford the time/money to put the work into advertising and getting published. Eliminate another 10% who can’t take criticism and thus aren’t going to be able to get their writing properly edited. Now eliminate another 5% either don’t have the patience for or get discouraged by receiving a series of “No’s” from publishers.
Now take that last 5% and eliminate all of them, except you. Why? Because they’re irrelevant. You have your writing and they have there’s. Whether or not you get published and how successful you are isn’t about other people’s writing. Yes, in the end, it’s you against one person, you. Whether or not I’ll ever get to buy your book off the shelf depends on you; how much time, effort, and funds you’re willing to put into your writing. So make it good!

Let’s open it up to the floor. Readers, do you have any publishing advice for our friend here? Let her know in the comments!

Sequel Block and Work-Arounds #Writing #Author #Advice

Hi Jim,

HELP!!! I’M TRYING TO WRITE A SEQUEL, BUT I CAN’T COME UP WITH ANYTHING! I JUST DON’T HAVE THE SAME INSPIRATION WITH THESE CHARACTERS AS I DID IN THE FIRST BOOK! I GET HALF WAY THROUGH, AND JUST CAN’T SEEM TO GET THROUGH IT BECAUSE IT BADLY CHANGES THE CHARACTERS PERSONALITIES AND THE DYNAMIC OF THEIR RELATIONSHIPS!

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE???

THANKS,
KHIMBAY

Hi Khimbay,

First of all, you don’t have to shout. Do you know how many internet etiquette laws you’re breaking by typing in all caps? You’re breaking one; Do Not Type In All Caps!

Okay, on to your question… I’m in the same boat. I know that there has been a lot of people asking about Soul Siphon’s sequel and I tried to give the audience what they wanted. However I couldn’t get anywhere with it…

What was holding me up? Well for starters, I spent a lot of time writing Mary Kelly. I was very careful to portray her in a way I think would be like who the actual historical MK was… if she was resurrected and lived for another 130 years. However I couldn’t replicate that in the second story. Why? Because all the mystery behind her was gone. We know about her soft side now, we know that her bitterness was shield against her own problems. I kept trying, but I wasn’t happy with how she was coming out.

The second issue was writing the devil. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get her (yes, HER) right. I wanted her to be flamboyant, outgoing, and an all-around like-able character,  but that came off too much like a certain TV show we all know and most of us love.

So I tried again with the devil, trying to make her lose her memory so that the one lacking her previous history isn’t even and the group is left with the moral conundrum of what to do with the devil, who may not actually be the devil. Again, it went nowhere and I couldn’t get her right in a way that would have made people like her.

So… sorry everybody, the Soul Siphon series is… at this point in time, defunct. Will I revisit the universe at some point, yes. I still have things l’d like to do there, but I doubt it’ll be in the form of a direct sequel.

So… unfortunately Khimbay, I can’t help you as I don’t have an answer to this problem either. My solution is to simply wash my hands of the whole situation and simply say ‘That’s it, no more direct sequels.’

This is something I did with Damnation. I refused to drag the characters from Divinity back out into another adventure when the characters already been possessed, beaten, one had been tortured, raped, and murdered, while the others had been put through LITERAL Hell. I know they’re characters that I just made up, but to me, that’s just cruel, and I’ve honestly seen how mean-spirited writing hurts a story.
However, I knew I wanted to do a follow-up to show the effects of what happened in Divinity and needed to find a way around that. So I created new characters and wrote a whole new story around the events of the previous novel. Yes, a few of the old characters made appearances, but they were strictly cameos.

I’m actually planning on doing the same thing with Drakin: The Story of Raiya after its published. There will be other stories (hopefully many) that take place in the same world. Yes characters from  The Story of Raiya may make appearances (if they survive), and will get honorable mentions, but the follow-up stories will not be about them. A post-apocalyptic world where humanity is recovering from literal decades of bloodshed to the point where they were facing extinction, opens up the possibility to a plethora of stories that can be created. The potential is there and the characters are waiting to be written… and I personally can’t wait. I plan on spending a lot of time in that world. Who knows, maybe we’ll see a familiar face or two along the way.

So that’s my advice to you, Khimbay and I apologize for going off-topic a little. If you don’t want to write a direct sequel, but do want to do a follow-up? Write a new story in the same universe. It’s technically still a sequel.

Hope this helps, but maybe our readers have other ideas, so I’ll open it up to the floor. What does everyone think? Do you have advice for Khimbay? Let me know in the comments.

From My Writing Playlist #Writing #Author #Advice

First of all… I really fucking hate this movie. The fast-paced editing gave me an absolute headache, there were limited original songs, the story was akin to a Disney princess tale mix with the Bohemian Rhapsody, and just… ugh. Nothing but the scenery was worth watching… until the finale. This song, one of the few originals was actually well done. I can’t find the original version where the owner sings the final refrain… the better version, but oh well.

When to listen: Duh… ITS A LOVE SONG! Play it at the conclusion of any love story plot line, even if that’s not the end of the book. Let the romance go out with a bang!

From My Writing Playlist #Writing #Author #Advice

Not going to lie, this one is on my normal playlist. I am a huge fan of Lindsey Stirling and I do like Peter Hollens as well. They do a great job with this song, which is the opening to my favorite game of all time; Skyrim.

When to listen: Fight scenes. Any fight scenes will do. This song has all the dynamic of a fight. A build up, the initial clash, the quiet agony and pushing yourself to continue and the triumphant close. Give it a listen.

Why do books not always translate well to movies? #Writing #Author #Advice

It’s not always the easiest question to answer. A lot of things go into making the jump from the written word to the big screen. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it doesn’t. Some stories weren’t ever meant to be turned into movies while others seem like they were made for it. Let’s explore some of the reason why a book may not translate well:

1. Scripting issues.
Contrary to some ill-informed beliefs, you can’t just have someone read from the book. You can’t. As a result, a writer has to sit down and turn the book into a playwright that can be acted out. Most often, it’s not the author of the original book that does this and it’s usually not just one writer. As with all things, one writer’s creative interpretations are usually quite different from another’s. This will result in the writer’s ‘interpretation’ through dramatic license of how they think the author’s story is supposed to go.

-A second problem is that while a script may have been sold, it’s not necessarily finished and more writers need to be called in finish the job, more writers mean more interpretations. Sometimes for the better… sometimes not…

-Another problem is a director, whose vision differs from that of the writer. In the end he has the final say and script rewrites can happen here at the director’s behest.

2. Studio Interference.
So you have your story, it’s great, people love it, and it’s well-known. So then you sell the rights to make it into a movie. Congrats, you’re rolling in dough… but now the studio takes over control of the story and the work begins to make it more fitting for the screen. Now some of these changes are obvious and necessary, such as cutting scenes to keep with a shortened run time or perhaps turning large blocks of dialogue into a more visual medium. This is to be expected with every story that makes its way to the big screen.
Books are taken through a lot of dialogue, that’s the medium, but movies are a visual medium and people want to see, they don’t want things described to them.
However… these changes are not always positive and some times they degenerate into a rather blatant form of meddling, adding more sex appeal to characters, perhaps adding in a comic relief character that wasn’t in the book or was a much less important character. Finally, product placement and merchandising comes into play. Once everything is done… the story can way too easily become unrecognizable from the original work.

3. Author interference.
In many cases, when we’re dealing with a more well-known author, extra steps have to be taken in order to get the rights to their books. The writers may make certain demands that the studios will have to work around. They also may often want to appease the author afterwards as there is no greater death sentence to a movie than a poor review from the person who wrote the original story.

This is one area that I’d caution about. If your film does get looked at to be turned into a play or a movie, be careful! Is the money you’re being offered worth having your story cannibalized? Most would say yes, but just make sure what you’re getting into, make sure that you can have your name pulled if you don’t like it, and make sure to have a lawyer read over the contract and negotiate things that you don’t want changed. Otherwise… you end up like these people…

Michael Ende:
This is one of my most beloved movies from my childhood. Imagine my surprise when I found out that the theme of the movie is actually ass-backwards from that of the book it was based on. It turns out that the book was condemning people who get lost in a fantasy world whereas the movie promoted the idea, saying that people no longer dreamed and thus were destroying themselves.
Ende absolutely loathed The NeverEnding Story to the point that he did everything he could until his dying day to destroy the movie. Apparently, the producers of the film hired other writers to do the above-mentioned edits to Ende’s script… completely neglecting to tell him anything about it. Ende was furious when he found out, but because the studio already owned the rights, he was largely ignored.
Ende was so angry that he had his name removed from the movie and proceeded to throw a multi-decade temper tantrum in the form of lawsuit after lawsuit. Ironically as the movie franchise became little more than a $1.99 at the gas station movie bin filler, starring Hollywood nuisance, Jack Black, by the time the 3rd movie came out, makes Ende’s anger seem… almost understandable.

P.L. Travers
I have never heard of anyone hating the movie that was based on their story more than her! She actually hated Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins more than I did!
By no means did she want her beloved story made into a movie and didn’t want Walt Disney’s… tackiness anywhere near it. Walt wouldn’t acquire the rights to MP for nearly 2 decades. It wasn’t until she fell on financial hardship that she finally surrendered the rights. Even so, she fought hard against the movie in almost every aspect. She hated the animated penguins, the senseless made up words, Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, even the color red was objected to. Rumor has it she was also deeply offended by Dick Van Dyke’s accent!
After seeing the finished product, she was so distraught that she went to tear Disney a new one, but there was nothing she could do.
As she began to get on in years, Travers gave her consent for a stage version of Mary Poppins under the very strict condition that absolutely no one who worked on the Disney film could be involved in any way, shape of form. Furthermore, she wanted  only British writers to be hired to write it.
Rumor has it that she went so far as to attack Walt Disney in her will. Making her hatred of the film known one last time… eesh.

So clearly you can see what happens when studios go out of control. So before parting with the rights over your intellectual work in any way shape or form, please know what you may be getting yourself into!
