In my opinion, there are three fathers of modern metal. They are as follows:
Black Sabbath
Blue Oyster Cult
Rush
Each had their own distinct style and each one gave birth to a different form of metal. Black Sabbath definitely opened the door to some of the heavier stuff like Black Metal, Death Metal, Thrasher Metal, etc.
However I think bands like Iron Maiden drew their inspiration from a style more closely related to Rush.
Technically, you could say that these bands don’t count as metal, but if that’s the case, you can (and should) put them in a proto-metal category.

When to Listen: This one is general playlist for me. I love Rush, so I could easily listen to them all day.
