From My Writing Playlist

New Alice Cooper!? Yes please!!!

When to listen: Alice Cooper’s music has always been brainstorming music for me and this song is no different. Listen when trying to come up with ideas. He also fits in well on the general playlist.

Is 50 Shades of Grey the Worst Thing Ever?

So… it’s been announced that yet another 50 shades movie is coming out. 50 Shades Freed has had its first trailer released… which I will NOT be linking to because this tripe doesn’t need more exposure.

With that news, there were a slew of comments about 50 Shades… and most of them were not pretty…

Untitled
Geesh… I’d heard that 50 Shades was bad, but this bad? I typically don’t read stuff like that because… well I’m not a masochist, unlike some of the characters, apparently.

However curiosity got the better of me and I decided to see what all the fanfare and… internet outrage was about. Now I’m suffering the consequences of having that book and the movie to follow burned into my brain.

All right, first of all, the answer to the subject should be obvious; no, of course 50 Shades is not the worst thing ever… but damn is it up there. So instead, I’ll qualify the opening statement by saying that you could argue it to be the worst thing to happen to literature in recent memory.

So, why is it so bad?

50 Shades was originally a Twilight fanfic… yeah, it was a fanfic of a book series that was already setting women and people who liked vampires back hundreds of years. However, this is another review for another time. So knowing that about Twilight, I think you can already see where I’m going with this. A fanfic of a bad series… becoming a bad series isn’t exactly a stretch.

I opened the book and began reading… the writing, sentence structure, and overall layout of the story was elementary at best. The use of symbolism and metaphor in the description of what the woman was going through during her… ‘scenes’ was completely cheesy and unbelievably difficult to get through without either laughing, or getting so irritated that I wanted to throw the book against the wall. Admittedly, I actually did this a few times.

So strike one against the book; bad writing.

So that’s bad, but is it enough to qualify it as the worst? Books are published all the time with horrible writing and content that quickly dull the senses. No, that couldn’t be it… so what else?

Untitled

This intrigued me and in anticipation of writing this piece, I felt that I had to look into this claim a little more. Upon doing research into what an actual BDSM lifestyle is like… I was shocked.

From where I stand, this book looks like it was written by someone on the outside looking in. There is a fine line between a Dom/Sub relationship and abuse… admittedly this book walks a fine line on glorifying abuse. In a true dom/sub relationship, the idea that the dom holds all the power is actually a complete falsehood. In truth, the sub holds the power and willingly gives that power to their dom. That power is there’s to give and take away at any moment and the dom has absolutely no say in the matter.

50 Shades touches on this, but goes way off on the structure and support roles, and doesn’t really get into the psychology of such a relationship. It barely grazes the surface.

So strike two; Failure to properly represent BDSM, resulting in glorifying a relationship that borderlines on abuse.

So now we’ve got bad writing and glorifying an abusive relationship. Is that enough to put it in the top category? No… not really. Again, there are plenty of horrible books out there that accomplish this.

So what pushes this book over the top?

Well… let’s look at the book from a societal impact. If you were to google ’50 Shades of Grey Ruined my marriage’ you’d get one hell of a mess of articles, mostly by women, talking about how 50 Shades ‘awakened’ something within them, and how they ‘realized’ their partner wasn’t doing it for them anymore.

Let’s take a look at one of these articles, shall we?

How 50 Shades of Grey Ruined My Marriage by messedupmum

(You’ll see very quickly why that’s an appropriate handle.)

“It’s a book that touches the very essence of us – its about our dreams, our desires and our expectations.”

Does it? Does it really? So your desire is for a man to tell you what do to, lie to you, abuse you, and get away with it because you’re weak-minded and he dotes on you with his small fortune? I think the feminist crowd is going to be coming after you with torches and pitchforks in short order.

She then goes on to explain how 50 Shades ruined her marriage…
“Because it woke me up to what I know exists and have never had in my marriage. It reinforced the feelings I have had for over 14 years – of being unfulfilled sexually. Of being the one who is ‘just not into it’

I guess I would be if it featured more than a grope of the boobs, a grab of the genitals and a I’m in exclamation! Then 1 minute later its over and he is snoring – slightly unsatisfying to say the least.

Now I know I have a responsibility to perhaps guide/ show him the way, but frankly when your life is so full of stress because you are expected to work to make up the shortfall, manage the kids, sort hospital appointments, play peacemaker, remember the lifelong medication streams and then make sure the rest of the house functions, showing someone how you’d like to be touched just doesn’t feature – in fact it’s annoying.”

Oh that’s lovely… typical First World these days it seems. You want something for nothing. You want your relationshipsto work, you want to feel fullfilled, but you don’t want to work at it. You’d rather just complain online about how your husband doesn’t fullfill you instead of… I don’t know… TALKING TO HIM!? Look I get it, marriage isn’t easy. There’s going to be anger, there’s going to pain, there’s going to be hurt feelings. That doesn’t mean it can’t work.

Marriage is tough and takes a lot of work… and I think that’s part of the reason so many fail. In this day and age, people aren’t willing to work for things.

Secondly, there is a joke going around the internet that I very much love… “What’s the difference between 50 Shades of Grey and Law and Order SVU? Christian is rich.”

Ask yourself, would the book be as big a hit if it took place in a trailer park? Probably not…

So that’s strike three; the societal impact has been overly negative and brought out the worst in people.

In the book’s defense, I wouldn’t say that you can really blame the book for destroying marriages, it could be a contributing factor, but I’d say that there are at least two other factors involved;

  1. There are already underlying issues in the marriage.
  2. People looking in the wrong place for resources about how to conduct a BDSM relationship.

After doing research into this, and judging by the comments on several of these articles, it seems that a lot of people finished reading this book and then flocked to social media sites such as Fetlife (again, not linking to it.) This has gotten them into trouble.

What I’ve seen d from the testimony of people who have experienced this is that fetlife is literally nothing more than a social media site for perverts and social degenerates. A few people who qualify themselves as people who actually live ‘the lifestyle’ have said that they are in the minority on sites like this. The sites are typically overrun with morally and ethically degenerate people who were never taught how to properly treat another person and are typically looking for a quick lay. The scary part is that there are apparently as many seniors acting this way as their are young adults. That is double disturbing as by that age, you should be a lot more mature.

As a result, these people who read 50 Shades, get the wrong idea about BDSM, and then go off and try these websites are often preyed upon by these people.

Look, I don’t care what you do in your spare time in the privacy of your own home. As long as its legal, as long as you’re alone or you’re with another consenting adult, and you’ve both done your research, have at it. However if you are interested in a dom/sub relationship or playing out different fantasies, do your research. Stay away from 50 Shades and Fetlife. There are plenty of legitimate articles and sexual counselors out there that can help and they’re not difficult to find.

Stay away from self-proclaimed experts and sketchy situations. You’re only going to put yourselves in danger and your relationships at risk.

So with all that said and done, is 50 Shades of Grey the worst thing to happen to the literary world in recent memory?
Honestly… given what I’ve posted above… yeah. I mean personal choice and ignorance really plays into it, but the mis-characterization of a BDSM relationship in this book and its affect cannot be ignored. The glaring cheesiness and poor writing make this book a hard read for any regular readers out there and next to impossible for casual readers.

But this is my own opinion. So let’s open it up to the readers. Please feel free to leave me a comment. Am I right on, do I have no idea what I’m talking about? Let me know!

Am I Ready to Publish?

Hi Jim!

I’ve always dreamed of being a writer, but always feared the steps it took to really “make it” being published. In your experience, when did you feel ready to submit your first book for publishing? How long did it take, what steps did you follow, did you already have a following, or enter any contests to get recognized first?
Sincerely,
Marian G.

Hi Marian,

Welcome to Godhood. I’m actually not kidding. Writing puts the ability to create worlds, whole universes, people personalities… literally everything right in your hands. It’s a wonderful yet daunting responsibility, especially when you take your first steps.

It’s very difficult to know when you’re ready. VERY difficult. You literally have to have all your ducks in a row. You need a synopsis, hook, an edited manuscript, and a good literary letter to send to agencies (assuming you’re going the traditional route).

Before you get going on putting your work out there for all to see, you want to consider whether or not its professional enough. Get someone to read it, get a group of people to read it, edit it, and give you their thoughts. Do NOT assume that you can do this yourself. You can’t. Trust me, your eyes are biased and rigged in a way that you will overlook your own mistakes over and over. Also, what makes sense in your mind, may not make sense in other people’s.

This cannot be overstated. Editing as much as possible is key!

If you’re going to go the traditional route, then yes, I would say getting your work printed in Magazines, entering contests, and getting yourself out there is essential. This will get you recognition that you can put into a pitch letter you send to an agency. Almost like a resume.

If you’re not going to go the traditional route, this may not be necessary. However yes, I would try to build a following on social media. You can do this by creating a blog, handing out advice, talking about your experiences, or just write about things that interest you that others may gravitate towards. I personally found my niche long ago by helping people and giving out advice, as you can see.

There are a lot of writing blogs out there, but not as many that actually answer direct questions, so that’s where I found my place.

You also want to make sure that you do this across multiple platforms. I have this blog connected to my Facebook page, pinterest, twitter, and several other social media sites so people can see what I’m doing and follow me if they don’t have a WordPress account.

Whichever publishing route you choose, DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! Look into everything you need to know before going ahead. Feel free to look back on my blog. I provide several resources over multiple posts that can help point you in the right direction. However, don’t just use my blog. Look at several literary sites to gain a feel for the environment ahead of you.

Hope this helps, thanks for the question!

Copyrighting my Writing. Am I Protected?

Hi Jim,

Thank you for liking my review.  I perused your blog and have decided to become a follower.

Can you point me toward sources of information about copyright information?  Eventually, I’d like to post some original fiction and poetry but worry about whether it’s wise to do so.  Does posting on my free blog site grant me any kind of legal protection regarding my own original thought?

Take care, be well, and happy blogging.
Denny

Hi Denny,

Well… if there’s a maxim a writer should live by, it’s that if you’re good at something, don’t do it for free. Writing, creating, brainstorming, and eventual publishing take time and money and everyone deserves to be compensated for their time.

You may notice that I have several stories posted on here that are not currently in print. That’s because most of them are either abandoned stories or ones I never really considered worth publishing. In one or two cases, I posted them to gauge reader reaction and decide if it was worth publishing.

I’d leave those up because they’re really rough drafts and there would be many edits and changes made to a final product, so it wouldn’t be the same thing. However, I never post more than a single chapter of any published work.

Anyway… I know that doesn’t answer your question. So if you’re going to go against the piece of advice, let me put it this way; your work is YOUR WORK the moment you put it to paper. It is technically already copyrighted. However that’s not going to stand up in any court if you decide to pursue a claim. Posting on a blog, free or paid does not guarantee you ANY protection. You’re putting your work out there, it isn’t up to the site to protect that.

Personally, I’d stay away from ANY resource on copyrighting if the site doesn’t have a .gov at the end of it. I’m not sure what country you’re from, but for the U.S., the best thing you can do is register your work with the U.S. Copyright Office.

I know a lot of people will say that if you’re going through traditional publishing, don’t do this because most publishers won’t take the extra time and money to purchase the copyright from you. However that doesn’t appear to be what you’re doing so it doesn’t apply. This is for posting your work and for self-publishers.

So I guess the best advice I could give is to register any work you plan on posting and do not post any work that you plan on publishing later.

Hope that helps. Readers, what do you think? Is there a better way to protect your work? Let Denny know in the comments.

To My Readers!

Hello everyone.

As I get closer and closer to finishing Raiya, I’ve been going back through my emails and attempting to answer questions that have been asked of me. I’ve been doing my best to either send you all links to posts where I may have answered your questions previously, or have been creating new posts to answer questions I haven’t yet.

You’ve all been patient and really great. I just wanted to drop a line and let you know that if you haven’t gotten a response from me yet or don’t see your question answered on my blog, rest assured, I am getting to it.

I literally have three pages of emails to go through on my gmail account and, while I am a notorious workaholic, having promised to respond personally to every bit of reader/fan mail I get, it does take a lot of time.

Bear with me. I will get my mailbox cleaned up soon!

Beta Readers, The Do’s and Don’ts

Hey Jim,

I swear I don’t stalk your blog. It is just refreshing to see a familiar face everyday. (Someone that posts consistently)
Maybe you have done a segment on this..
What is your take on Beta readers? How do you find a Beta reader that A. will actually suffer through a horribly rough draft B. Wont steal your shit and C. Will provide useful and honest feedback on your writing style, story line, and character development?
BTW. I am not a metal fan by any means. Nor a country fan. Like I said before, I find vocals to be extremely distracting. I stick with classical relaxation music in the background and currently would appreciate a good “muse” in the form of music but have yet to find that medium. I can, however, appreciate your insight on the subject. Thank you for sharing your playlist.

Cheers.

Dacia

Hi Dacia,

Haven’t seen you comment on my posts in a while. Was starting to wonder what happened. Hmm… looks like we’ve got a multi-question one today… all right. Let’s take it one at a time.

First off, stalk away. I don’t mind frequent visitors, it helps my blog more than anything!

So beta readers… it’s tough. It’s really tough. First thing I would do when looking for a beta reader is document every exchange you have back and forth with someone if you don’t know them. Goodreads usually has some pretty trustworthy beta reading circles, but you still need to be careful. I tried to go through their a while back and honestly, got a bull assessment of my first chapter from someone who claimed to be a ‘speed reader.’ They wanted money to review the rest… and not a small amount either.

Look into the person you’re considering working with. Do they have other publications with reviews? What is their level of education? Are they an active member of whatever community you’re searching through? Don’t be afraid to ask questions and turn down offers if something doesn’t seem right.

The second thing you can do is try to forge a relationship on here with someone. That’s pretty much how I did it. I’d also recommend finding more than one person, two sets of eyes, one biased (yours), one not (a beta), are still likely to miss a few things. Multiple beta readers however will help you out a lot. So… I guess I’m volunteering if you’d be interested in doing an exchange?

That’s usually the best way to do it. An exchange with another author anxious to find someone who’s willing to sift through their work as well. Otherwise you’ll likely shell out $100-$300 for a college student to do the work… which is fine, they really do a great job, but when you’re spending $300 (min.) for a cover, $100 a piece for each ISBN needed, and $35 for the copyright fee, it adds up fast.

One piece of advice I’d give you before reaching out to people you don’t know is to REGISTER YOUR WORK! That’s right, get it copyrighted. It’s technically already copyrighted the moment you put pen to paper, but registering it guarantees that you’ll be protected and able to furnish proof against another writer who hijacks your book.

Finally, inspirational pieces with no vocals… that is a tough one.
I’m afraid I don’t work with much in the way of instrumental music, but I do have a few selections…

Since you mentioned classical, might I recommend checking into music from the Baroque era? I tend to like that a lot more with my writing. I don’t have any real selections for you as I wouldn’t be able to identify them. I usually just switch on baroque stations on spotify.

Anyway, hope this helps!

Drakin Sequel, Name Reveal and Cover Help!

Hello all!

So I am pleased to announce that we currently have a working title for the next installment in the ‘Drakin’ world.

Unless something drastically changes, the next book in the series will be titled ‘Drakin: The Orphans of Haven.

So I’m in the middle of brainstorming a cover design for the next book. Obviously the cover to The Story of Raiya is tough one to follow. However, I’d like everyone’s opinion. If you could, in the comments, vote for your favorite cover design of all the ones we’ve done so far, so I know what to go for.

  1. The Magnifica Series (Choose one):

  2. The Divinity Series:

  3. Soul Siphon:
    Featured Image -- 5429
  4. Drakin: The Story of Raiya

Can’t Find the Right Words?

(Heads up, this one is… sensitive. It may not be an easy read for… pretty much anyone with a heart. I already cleared it with the requester that it was okay to post this. To which she agreed on condition of anonymity.)

Hi Jim,

I’ve been trying to write a story about my husband’s life. He was died in the line of duty a year ago. The thing is… I’m having trouble. I don’t know how to convey how the world changed when he left us. I sit in front of the keyboard and scream because I just can’t get it out. He was the love of my life who was willing to put his life on the line to keep everyone he loved safe.
I think about how I had to put my kids to bed each night and they would ask me when daddy was coming home. I’d wind up not being able to sleep, instead sitting up wondering what to tell them. How do I permanently break the hearts of children that haven’t even reached double digit ages?
His death left me with a hole in my chest that I couldn’t fill and could never be repaired. I don’t know how to write about it. How do you express the hole left when someone like that just permanently vanishes from your life.

Any advice you can offer me would be greatly appreciated.

Hello…

Believe it or not, this is why I really hope no one ever asks me to write a eulogy. I can do it, but I’d probably hate it because no matter what I write, it will sound trite, contrived, and cliched in my head. No words will ever be enough. I really wish I had some sage advice for you… but honestly… I think you just did it. I had a hard time reading what you wrote. You conveyed how you felt, how it affected the people around you and how the world was different for you now.

That’s really all you have to do. You simply need to take what you wrote above and elaborate on it. Build on the feelings you’ve already expressed. If you have trouble finding the right words, ask around. Ask the other people who knew him to help you. Maybe have other people contribute or even write in quotes. Word articulation comes much easier to some people than others, especially if they aren’t grieving as badly.

I know it doesn’t seem like it, but you’re not alone. There are people out there ready and willing to help. You just have to make the big leap and… ask. You’ll be surprised how many people will come out of the woodwork if they haven’t already.

As cliche as it may sound, speak from the heart and readers will pick up on it. Write genuinely and people will pick up on it. Just put your feelings down on paper, all of them. Once you’re done, sort them out, or ask for help in organizing them into some semblance of coherency. Don’t worry about how it sounds, just get what you can down on paper. Trust me, once you start writing, the words will begin to flow. It takes time, but it will happen.

So on that note… I’m sorry… I can’t really help you any more than that, because honestly, you can write for eternity and never fully convey how wonderful a person is or how you felt. Every day is a different emotion worth a million words, probably infinitely more than that in your case.

Just don’t give up, write as much as you can until you feel that you’ve gotten out a satisfactory amount. Please feel free to email me back if you have trouble finding the right words. I’ll be happy to help!

All – please take a moment to thank our friend for her loved one’s sacrifice… and any advice or words of encouragement you can give her would be greatly appreciated. Don’t forget to support our men and women in uniform!

From My Writing Playlist

Okay okay, yes I know it’s ‘country.’ My wife is a big ‘country’ fan, so expect to see a few of these show up.

Firstly, I don’t consider this country. Johnny Cash is country. John Denver is country. This… is pop music. This is to country what Good Charlotte and Corporate Something were to punk. Think you know where I’m going with that.

When to listen: Okay now that I got my rant out of the way… Why did I put this on my list? Because I can’t resist a motivator song. You’ve seen me post them before. Songs that are pure positive energy. The music is upbeat, so are the lyrics. I especially love the guitar solos. Songs like this are a dime a dozen, but also one in a million… if that even makes sense. Songs that you could listen to while cruising, that make your blood pump, and are just there to make you feel good. Regardless of genre, I can’t fault a song for that.

So put aside personal preference and enjoy. Listen to motivators either during writer’s block or brainstorming, and definitely put it on your general playlist.

Drakin: The Story of Raiya Update!

Just wanted to give a quick update…

The synopsis has been submitted and approved. We’re going ahead with that. The first draft is now in the hands of the editor. I’m waiting on the corrections from him before moving on to the next step.

The cover is progressing… surprisingly quickly and so far looks awesome. Can’t wait for you all to see it.

We still don’t have a release date, though I am shooting for some time in December. I don’t want to lock myself into that because there’s still considerable work that needs to be done and I want this to be as perfect as possible.

Be patient, be excited, and I’ll have a brand new adventure for you soon!

Readers,

Do you have a question about writing, publishing, my stories, etc? Please feel free to post a comment or email me.

jimthewritingwizard@gmail.com

I’ll use those comments to select my next blog post.

I have been writing for several years, have 4 published works, experience with publishing and independent work, so I can hopefully be of assistance.

Please note, I only do one of these a day and will do my best to respond to everyone, but it may take some time.

Also, feel free to check out my works of Fantasy and Historical Fiction, Available on Amazon and where ever books are sold. See the link below:

Thanks friends!

Catch you on the flip side!

From My Writing Playlist

This is a very melodic, very hollow song. Its beautiful and haunting at the same time, as you would expect from Epica.

When to listen: Hero reflection, either after the loss of a mentor or perhaps even a lover. You could also arguably use this if your main character sacrifices themselves for someone they care about.
