Okay, okay, I know, not metal. So what? Some people say that classical music helps improve cognitive functions. I couldn’t agree more. That being said, classical isn’t just full orchestras in massive concert halls. Quite often it’s the songs of our forefathers. The songs of myths, legends, and adventures past. Also, being an avid lover of Norse Mythology helps.
When to Listen: This is a bit of a solemn number. If you look up the details or just speak the language, you know that this song is about a man who refuses to Marry a Norse creature (in most cases a Troll) because she’s not Christian. In essence, this song was Christian propaganda for the time. That said, I’d encourage you to ignore the story when writing and focus on the melody. Use this during a low point in the story. Either a beloved character has died or something important has been lost and the main character is reeling from it.

It seems like we have similar taste in music. You might like ‘Vulgaris Magistralis’ by Heidevolk.

I can’t listen to any music with (to me) understandable lyrics while I write. If I can hear words, they mess up my own. So anything classical works, as does a lot of non-English language songs. Luckily, I have a hard time picking out lyrics, even on English language songs, so symphonic metal works for me, too, as it has enough “crash” that I can block out the words. Mostly, though, I’ve been using “Trailer Music,” my label for a genre that combines classical and modern orchestrations; high in power, but very thin on lyrics.

In that case, I’d recommend ‘The Call of the Mountains’ by Eluveitie… in it’s original Swiss. I posted this song a while back. There’s something about hearing a song in the band’s native tongue. It actually sounds better.
