Hi Jim,

I’m going through the motions on Createspace and KDP. I’m trying to decide how much to charge for my books. It’s hard, I want to maximize my profits while at the same time, not sticking it to the readers. It’s tough because I don’t know whether it’s better to mark it at a lower price to attract more sales or count on people liking my book and putting it at a higher price.

However, I need to figure that out on my own. My question is actually on a certain part of the KDP where it asks you whether or not to offer the digital version for free for those who buy a hard copy. What do you think about that? I mean, I keep going back and forth on it…

Thanks,
Wal

Hi Wal,

First, let me apologize to my readers en mass. I have been neglecting my mailbox due to the development of The Orphans of Haven and because my wife is expecting our next child… in the next two weeks.

Still, I want to try to cover a few here and there so that my inbox doesn’t go too crazy.

Okay, Wal… honestly that’s a tough one. I would say that you’d want to price it low. Think about it. It’s literally the difference between making $.35/book or $.50/book. You can always increase the price later if you must, though I’d advise against it. You’re really never going to become that rich from book sales.

But as you say, that’s not what you asked. IMHO, I think if someone’s willing to shell out the extra $5-10 for a hard copy of your book in this digital age, the ethical thing to do would be to allow them to download a digital copy for free. At least that’s how my mind works.

Yes, one can argue that’s like saying that someone who buys the book should get a second copy free, but I guess I’m a little old school in my thinking that not all formats of a book are equal. So take it as you will.

Anyway, there really isn’t much more to say on this one. That’s my opinion, but let’s open it up to the floor and see what the rest of my readers think.

Thanks!

  1. Ithink that people who buy th hard copy should get the digital download for free. They can read the digital now, and take advantage of any links that are the book, without having to write them from the hard copy.

  2. Never say never, but basically you are right. a writer is never going to get rich off Amazon. I say, be generous. Kindness and generosity are never wrong.

    • I mean… I stand by that. Even if you sell a million copies, you’re likley going to get just enough to… maybe buy yourself a fixer upper here in Massachusetts.
The authors you see like Stephen King and such didn’t really get rich off of book sales. I’d bet a bottle of fine scotch that the majority of their money came from movie deals, signings, and speaking events.
