Hello all,

So I got a few emails, all asking the same question. Is this it? Will “Rule of One” be the final chapter in the Drakin series?

Yes.

The truth of the matter is that this series went on a lot longer than I had intended. Originally, I had only intended to write a trilogy. The original series was supposed to be, simply The Story of Raiya, Nylie’s Tears, and An Empire of Ashes. Well, obviously things didn’t work out quite like that. Nylie’s Tears became The Orphans of Haven, which, when I started writing the book, I had no idea that it was going to become what it became. That book took on a life of its own and became something far beyond what I had originally imagined.

That should have been an indicator for what was going to happen with the rest of the series. After writing those three novels, I felt like there was so much more to say. Qira’s story wasn’t done. I wanted to explain more about how she went from being a naive dragon girl to a legendary and much beloved senator in the UPW.

So I added three more books, then went back, took a look, and decided that I didn’t want to end the story on The Butcher’s Endsong, so I went to work on one more. Since even before Raiya, I have been delivering a new book almost every year for the past 13 years! This has been a labor of love that I have thoroughly enjoyed for a very long time, but all good things have to come to an end.

Does this mean I’m done writing? Probably not. You may see me pop up with a new book in the works in a few years. You may find me doing a Drakin offshoot. Never say never. The main storyline, however, is done. I’ve wrapped everything up and the main characters that are still with us can live their lives. Honestly, this is me pretty much saying I need a break. I’ve delivered 13 stories, one a year while working full time and raising a family. It takes a lot out of you to be able to balance all three.

To my readers, words cannot begin to express my gratitude, especially for those of you who have stuck it out with me since the beginning. You all rock and I’ve loved getting, and responding to, fanmail and questions about canon along the way. It’s been an absolutely amazing journey, one that shouldn’t be over any time soon.

So with that, I will see you all again soon. I am so excited to release Drakin to you next week! It’s going to be one hell of a ride!

Cheers!

  1. As they say, don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened. I enjoyed these books a lot, especially Empire of ashes, as I think it’s a great mix of high stakes and hope which is sorely needed in today’s world.
