Loveless Pt. 2

I have been in a relationship since 2 years. But since a few months, something is lacking, something is wrong… He has hurt me quite a few times now… But every time, I think I have had enough of it, and I go ahead to talk to him, I fail in doing so… I don’t have the guts to hurt him. I know he loves me, but something is missing.
This is my first relationship. I don’t know what to do. Will I wait? Or do I go talk to him?

Tris Flynn

Did I just get roped into becoming a relationship counselor? I don’t think I’m suited for the job. Writing is my area of expertise…

Having said that, I swore I’d never turn someone away asking for help. Tris, PLEASE UNDERSTAND, I am not a professional. I would never claim to be one. I write romance rather heavily into my stories and have seen the best and the worst relationships have to offer. All I can offer you is what I know based on my own experiences. So please understand the limit of my advice.

Okay… First of all, don’t wait. I’m not kidding, do NOT wait. The worst thing you can do is wait. Waiting means that your thoughts and fears are stewing. It gives you too long to think about things and for you to imagine the worst possible outcomes! Go talk to him. Tell him how you feel, lay it on the line. Preface it by saying that you’re not trying to hurt him. See what he says, see how he reacts, and who knows? Maybe something good will come out of it.

If not… if it turns into a fight or nothing comes out of it, then it may be time to walk. You have every right to be happy and consider yourself in this as well. I’m not sure how old you are, but I can tell you that even if the relationship crumbles, there will be other ones. That I promise you.

Again and as I say to everyone;
If you want to talk about this in more detail, please email me! I’d be happy to talk more.

Thanks friends!

Character Descriptions

Hey Jim,

I was just wondering how you come up with your character descriptions? I’m trying to accurately describe my character, but sometimes it can be hard to figure out exactly how I want them to look, you know?

Thanks,
Gerraid

Hi Gerraid,

All too well, I’m afraid. It can be tough figuring out what your character looks like. If you create the character from scratch in your mind, it can be tough to write that person down on paper, especially if it’s a main character description where you want to go into vivid detail. So I’ll give two pieces of advice here:

Minor Characters: Give Hair and Eye color, gender, tall/short, and maybe one or two identifying marks (Scars, facial hair etc.) This is a character that you probably aren’t going to see much, so going into great detail to describe them really isn’t necessary, or even wanted in most cases.

Major/Lead Characters: Okay, here’s where you really want to go into detail, especially if you have a specific idea about what this character looks like.  So what I try to do is take the Minor Character description (see above) and find someone who resembles your description. Study them carefully and describe that person in your text. Be careful to leave out any identifying details such as specific birthmarks, tattoos, or such… unless  the person knows your using them as a template.

Let me give you an example…

In my most recent book, one of my characters is a historical person… however there are no real pictures of her that can identify her. We don’t even know her real hair color other than the fact that people nicknamed her ‘ginger.’

Well I took that nickname and the fact that she’s from Ireland and made the assumption that she had red hair. So I’ve got a redhead, presumably a ginger, which means freckles and fairly pale skin, and from both my story and her historical description, a bit of a violent side.

So I searched for a while, but couldn’t find the right person who matched this character… until I went back and re-watched a few episodes of one of my favorite shows. That’s when I saw her… a red haired bad ass who seemed to have a perpetual scowl on her face. PERFECT!
I looked up a picture of her and then described the shape of her lips, how her hair parted, the way her eyes looked, the shape of her nose, etc. I made a few edits and a few embellishments on the way, but at the end, I had my character.

Everyone has their own way and their own style and my hat goes off to those people who can just pull full character descriptions out of the air.

Anyway, I hope this helps!

Soul Siphon Update

This is it people, the final full week of development on the book before everything goes to the publisher. With any luck, the April 1st release date will actually become a reality… though I’ve never not had to postpone a release, fingers crossed this time!

I’ve seen the development of the cover and I can’t wait to share it with you all. The promo posters are complete, I’m working on getting those printed up and will hopefully have them available at Pax East and Boston Comic Con. The edits to the book are nearing completion (3 chapters to go!), and I’m excited to finally file this one under done. As I’ve said before, Soul Siphon is a major departure from anything that I’ve written before, so I can’t wait to see what you all think! Once again, all I ask is that if you buy the book, PLEASE leave a review for it on the site you bought it from (assuming you bought it online.)

So if you’re into action packed stories that mix in a little bit of horror and romance, Soul Siphon should be the book for you. It is a non-stop ride that was a real joy to write!

Page Count: 518
Genre: Urban Fantasy/Paranormal/Superhero

A starved child, an assassinated soviet soldier, a woman abandoned on the streets of Hong Kong, a victim of history’s most mysterious killer, and a young man who never asked to be thrown into the middle of a spiritual war.

They reside in the shadows and other dark places, waiting for those who would inflict pain and suffering on the innocent. An unlikely group, with one thing in common; death. Each with powers that reflect the way they died. Corban found himself thrust into the fray with this group of anti-heroes.

Cursed with unstable powers stemming from a fatal demonic possession, Corban must unravel the mystery behind his death. As more information comes to light, Corban begins to realize that nothing in his life was what it appeared to be and the price of victory may be his own soul.

Other updates:
We have an illustrator currently working on the cover. It should look amazing when its done!

Damnation Author interview.

Hi All,

I’ve gotten quite a few emails about Damnation… Given that I’m trying to balance my time between my reader base, AND getting Soul Siphon out there to all of you, the emails are too much for me to be able to answer individually.

Don’t get me wrong, I love getting them and I read every last one personally. It’s just difficult finding time to respond to them all. So instead I thought maybe it would be best for me to take the most reoccurring questions and write up an interview. So hopefully this answers all questions, but if not, feel free to leave a comment under this message and I’ll do the best I can to give a brief response.

Thanks friends!

Question 1: What is the premise for Damnation?

Damnation is a story that goes concurrently with Divinity. It is a reactionary story that starts out during the same time period, but actually goes later then Divinity. The second part of it happens as the result of what goes on in Divinity, though for the most part, it is only barely affected by the events.

Question 2: So this isn’t a direct sequel?

No, as I’ve previously stated, Adalyn and Giovanni’s story is over. They’ve been through their adventure, suffered loss, faced insurmountable odds, and managed to come out on top.
They faced off against both God’s decree and Hell’s infernal legions, I can’t imagine them having to face off against anything worse. Let’s let them have their happy ending, yes?

Question 3: Does that mean that they’re not going to appear?

Oh by no means. Characters from Divinity will indeed make appearances, but they will not be main cast members in this one. They will be reduced to guides and cameos, but don’t worry, we’ll be able to check in on our previous heroes.

Question 4: It seems that you often write the basic premise about good vs. evil, and the male hero saving the damsel in distress. Can we expect to see a stronger heroine in this one?

Stronger? I’m not sure what you mean. Yes Adalyn was rescued early on in the book by Giovanni, but throughout the rest of the book Adalyn does much of the saving.
Considering everything she went through, all while being completely blind, I’m not sure how much stronger of a character I can write.
If you’re hoping I’ll write a story where the heroine spends most of the time saving the hero, you’re going to be disappointed. Though I started off writing… as you say, basic good vs. evil, I think Divinity shows that my writing has grown from that. It’s no longer the guy saving the girl, it’s them saving themselves and each other, often times from their own nature.
Damnation and Divinity were meant to be symbiotic stories where two unlikely people from two completely different walks of life come together to face down evil. Neither could succeed without the other’s help. I sincerely hope that’s the message I’ve been conveying, but if not, please email me, as I’d be very interested in hearing your thoughts. Thanks!

Question 5: You use that picture very often, is that going to be on the cover of your book?

Oh Heaven’s no! That was a pencil sketch which I had done when I first created the character. Often times I do small concept art pieces so I have a visual to refer to when I’m writing a physical description of a character. It just came out really well and I wanted to share it.
No, trust me, the cover will be infinitely more elaborate.

Question 6: Are you planning any further sequels for Divinity?

Honestly… I don’t know. Damnation’s rewrite may have damaged the story line for the potential sequel, but I’m not certain yet. It would require rewriting another draft I have.

Question 7: Why are her wings black?

You’ll find out in the book.

Question 8: Why are you against writing sequels? You seem to have a bit of a chip on your shoulder when it comes to them.

Okay… for the record, I don’t have a problem with sequels, when they’re needed and/or done correctly.
That said, ask yourself, did Cinderella need a sequel? Did Jaws? Did the NeverEnding Story need one? Did the Phantom of the Opera need one?

The answer should be ‘no.’ As I said before, once a story is over, it’s over. The people who wrote those stories never intended for there to be a sequel and thus creating a sequel wouldn’t be seamless and it wouldn’t be natural. The result is a ton of plot holes and really poor story-telling. It is a bad idea to make a sequel when one isn’t needed, but that doesn’t mean I’m against sequels. Arguably, Empire Strikes Back is far superior to the original. Lord of the Rings obviously couldn’t be done in one book, and so on.

Stories that are meant to be continued should have a sequel. Stories that aren’t, really shouldn’t have one forced, especially once you’ve established the ‘Happily Ever After.’ It rarely ends well.

That said, you can do a sequel to a story like that, perhaps make it surround minor characters, bringing them to the forefront, etc. Which is what I did with Damnation.

Question 9: If you were against the idea of writing a sequel, then why did you?

To be perfectly honest, to get a publisher’s attention. I had Divinity written and it was complete, but when I spoke to the literary agent I was trying to convince to take on my work, the conversation ended rather abruptly when I told him that I wasn’t planning a sequel. To date, it’s the stupidest thing I’ve done in terms of writing.
So at that point, I knew I had to find a middle ground. I knew that I had to figure out a way to preserve the ‘Happily Ever After’ while being able to continue the story, pretty impossible, yes?
Well that’s when I took a couple of side characters from Divinity, added in entirely new characters, and created an entirely separate story. It was a story that was not a direct sequel, but because it involved characters from the first book, it still counted. It was my middle ground.
That said, something happened along the way… more and more ideas kept coming, the story grew and grew and before I knew what was happening, Damnation had emerged from Divinity’s shadow and become a story that I was even more proud of than Divinity.

Question 10: How similar is it to Divinity’s themes?

We’re still dealing with a fallen angel and a human rescuer, but things are considerably different this time around. This story is much darker, far more desperate, and focuses far more on the internal struggles of the main character as opposed to external ones.

Loveless

“Dear Jim,

I’ve been writing a romantic fantasy story for a while now. Things were going great until I found out that my own relationship is not what I thought it was. I don’t want to go into detail, but he betrayed me with a friend of his. This isn’t the first time that something like this has happened either. I’ve pretty much given up on relationships and trusting other people and was wondering… if you don’t believe in love, how can you write about it?

Appreciate your help,
Trish.”

Hi Trish…

I’m really sorry that happened to you. I know from experience what it’s like when the person who is supposed to love you the most turns cold and hurts you. It stings and the pain doesn’t go away. It get’s easier to deal with, but it never goes away.

Anyway… I had another reader who asked about a similar case a few posts ago. Normally, I would just refer you to that post, but your case seems a little more extreme. I would seriously urge you NOT to give up on love all together. A life without it isn’t really living. Just because you’ve got a history of hurt (you’re not alone) doesn’t mean you should just give up. Love comes in many different forms and sometimes is hard to recognize.

If you really think that your view will impede your ability to write this romantic fantasy book of yours to the point where it grinds you to a halt, then stop writing it. Move to another writing project, or just do some personal writing. Create a second word document and do a sort of ‘Alternate Ending’ to the story. You don’t have to share it with anyone, you don’t even have to keep it with the other story. Write it, put your characters through Hell, and then when you feel like you’re more up to it, complete your Romantic Fantasy the way you wanted to originally.

I would also strongly recommend that you find someone to talk to. Find someone you can confide in and just talk, talk about how you feel and what you need to get out. If worst comes to worse, please feel free to email me and we can discuss this further.

My thoughts and prayers will be with you today on this one. It’ll be okay.

Thanks and best of luck,
Jim

The Root of My Inspiration

Everyone has a first. Everyone has some band, song, or performer that first got them into what they listen to now. For me, my entry into the type of music I listen to started way back when the genre was in it’s infancy. In fact, this person isn’t technically part of that genre at all, but his music is so close that he served as a gateway before Stratovarius took over.

So where did my entry into hard rock/Metal come from? One name… a man I’ve listened to since I was a child. A Canadian whose American fandom apparently knows no limits.

I’m speaking, of course, about John Parr!

Oh man… what can I say about this guy? Known mostly for his soundtrack songs to St. Elmo’s Fire and the lesser known Restless Heart on The Running Man soundtrack, John Parr was America’s favorite 80s Canadian singer… and boy did we love him.

“We did? But I’ve never heard of him!”

Oh yes you have. Ever listen to Meatloaf? He’s the creative genius behind quite a few of his songs. Even if you haven’t listened to Meatloaf, how could you miss St. Elmo’s Fire?

Following that, Parr had some success on the U.S. Top 40 with songs like Naughty Naughty, though that’s not what I know him for. He hit the chart at #23 in 1984…

After that, he was the lead in the Rock Opera ‘Paris’ in 1989… which if you haven’t seen it, you have my sympathies friends. It’s a good show!

Unfortunately, he disappeared from the music scene at least the mainstream music scene until the early 2000s, and has been active ever seen.

More than one of my mix CDs had St. Elmo’s Fire, Restless Hearts, and Naughty Naughty on them throughout High School. I highly recommend his music to anyone out there that has a (not so) guilty pleasure of 80s Rock and Roll!

MORE Inspirational Music

Honestly, I keep finding more and more music to listen to. This next batch is from a band I recently came across in my search for writing music. That’s music which I listen to when I write. Not music I write…

Let’s just move on…

So today’s inspiration comes from a band that has been with us for some time (and somehow I just found out about…) Freedom Call.

I know many Metalheads consider these guys somewhat cheesy and granted, they do sounds like an 80s hair Metal band, but it’s still Epic music.

The first song, Warriors, has one of the liveliest chorus lines I’ve ever heard in my life:

The second song definitely sounds like what I was talking about. In fact every time I listen to it, my wife starts singing ‘The Final Countdown.’ *Rolls eyes*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rGzYDDv44c

Finally we get to the song that first turned me on to these guys in the first place

I love this song, love the vocals, the piano… everything!!! Give them a listen, and enjoy being taken on an adventure!

Are Narrative Stories Out of Date

So a few days ago I was reading a the original ‘Little Mermaid’ by Hans Christian Anderson. I was curious about the story after my boys took a liking to the Disney version. I won’t spoil anything for anyone, but I highly recommend reading the original. It is superior in every way to the lax character development of the Disney version.

Anyway, more on topic, the reason I bring it up is because the story is written in a very old form of storytelling. This is a narrative story. What does that mean exactly? Well it’s a story where the reader tells, instead of shows in many cases. Where in more modern times, things are shown through dialogue and action, these stories were loaded with much more description and close to no dialogue at all. The best example I could give would be a campfire story. When you’re around the campfire speaking your adventure, are you going to load it down with dialogue? Of course not, that’d just look silly. You’re going to talk out everything, including descriptions and character actions.

In modern literature, the golden rule is now ‘Show, Don’t Tell.’ To keep an audience engaged, you need to allow them to draw their own conclusions as to what’s going on, what characters are thinking, and much of the who/what/where. Narrative stories essentially deny the audience that, which is why they are often frowned upon in today’s market.

Does that mean that they are out of date and should no longer be used?
Well… yes, to a point. In more simplistic children’s literature where a child is only beginning to think  outside the box, a narrative story is exactly what you want… unless you want your kid asking you a million questions during the story.

However in terms of adult stories… I’m afraid it’s something we rarely see any more. Would I say that they’re out of date? No… more like out of style. Don’t get me wrong, there are still plenty of narrative stories that keep my attention and keep me engaged, but they are often far in between. The best thing to do is enjoy them as you would any other antique. Though they may not be what they were, often they are still great stories worthy of remembrance. I just wouldn’t recommend writing a new story in this style.

Blogs of Importance

Hello Mr. Harrington,

I saw on one of your posts that you take questions. So here it is, how important is it to publishers that you have a blog with a lot of followers and how many followers do they want to see. Right now, I don’t see myself devoting time to acquiring followers. It seems very time consuming and I’d rather use that time to write my novel. Thank you for your time. I hope all is well.

Hi Marc,

On a scale of 1-10, ten being THE most important, and 1 being least… I’d say 1.5 at best. Publishers don’t typically look at blogs, at least not public ones. For example, if you have a blog for your local newspaper, it falls under their domain, and you’re paid to write for them, that’s huge! That’s definitely something you’ll want them to look at. However from my experience, when it comes to blogs like wordpress, given that anyone can get one, I’d say it makes very little difference at all. This is from my experience anyway. Publishing agents and publishers don’t really care all that much. They are more interested in things like articles you’ve had published, or other book publications.

Hope this helps.

Readers, how important do you think blogs are in getting your work published?

MORE Inspiration for you!

Today, I’d like to recommend a brand new album from my favorite concept group, Avantasia!

The Album is entitled ‘Ghostlights’ and is a brand new story from a man I consider a Master Storyteller; Tobias Sammet. The moment you pick up this album, you know that you’ve grabbed a hold of something special. No getting around this one, I LOVE the artwork on these albums.

Anyway, Avantasia is a unique group of singers performing a part in a Metal Opera. These singers are from various Metal bands, including Helloween, Within Temptation, Nightwish, and Magnum, just to name a few. One of the more unique things about Avantasia is that you can listen to the songs independently of the album and still get the gist of what’s going on, or you can listen to it straight through and pick up the whole story.

When writing, the songs I recommend are as follows:

Let the Storm Descend Upon You
Master of the Pendulum
and
Mystery of a Blood Red Rose

Anyway, take a listen and feel free to add a few recommendations of your own!

Embracing the Dark Side…

“Dear Jim,

I’ve been writing a novel for some time now, but it’s been a struggle. I’ve come on hard times recently with a friend. I’ve felt betrayed and hurt. The problem is that I’m afraid to write while I feel that way. I’m worried that it will affect my writing and change how the story goes. Do you think I should keep going or put it on the back burner until I feel better?

Thanks for any help you could provide,
Jaclyn.

Okay… well obviously you’ve got a lot you’re dealing with right now. The best thing I would do right now is find someone to talk to and get your frustrations out. If all else fails, you have my email. I’d be happy to talk to you further if you just need to vent.

Anyway to answer your question; I know a lot of people would tell you to put your writing on hold and pull yourself back together first. Get all your ducks in a row and then get back to work. It’s sound advice for certain.

That said, I’m going to break the mold here. I think you should continue writing. If there is one thing I’ve found from my writing is that striking the keys and putting emotion on paper is EXTREMELY therapeutic. You say that you feel hurt and betrayed… what would you give to be able to just put all of your inhibitions aside and let loose on the world? How grand would it be to just let everyone know how you feel and not be judged for it or have your reputation damaged?

That’s where writing comes in. Writing, like painting or sculpting, is an art form. The best art is the kind where you can feel the creator’s emotion and see their heart put into it. Now consider, what are the strongest emotions? Love is certainly one of them, as is joy, but then anger, fear, and hatred are also very powerful.

These are all human emotions, when it comes to your art, don’t fight them, embrace them! I invite you to go into a dark room some where, shut the lights out, lock the door, power up your computer, bring up your book, and let your emotions come to a head. Bring out all the anger, the hatred, the sadness, and the feelings of betrayal. Push them all to the surface and then start typing. (You may want to buy a cheap, expendable keyboard for this).

Pound away at the keys, Jaclyn. Take your characters in whatever direction your emotions take you. Don’t let up, don’t be merciful, DO IT! As a favor to me, do this. Then email me and tell me how you feel. I don’t care if you like what you’ve written, that’s what the ‘cut’ command is for, though I think you may be surprised with what you come up with. Regardless of whether or not you use what you’ve written, trust me, you’ll feel worlds better.

My other piece of advice would be to keep what you’ve written. Don’t delete it!!!!! Save it to another file if you choose not to use it and if those feelings come back to haunt you later, refer back to it. Read it again and use it as a release.

My thoughts and prayers for you today, Jaclyn. It will be all right, eventually, everything will be all right.

Best,
Jim

Please note, I only do one of these a day and will do my best to respond to everyone, but it may take some time.

Also, feel free to check out my works of Fantasy and Historical Fiction, Available on Amazon and where ever books are sold. See the link below:

Soul Siphon Update

Less than a Month to go…

We’re more than half way through the edits! The cover design is complete and just being finished up! All legal documentation is out of the way, and we’re good to go!

With any luck, our release date of April 1 will be a reality!

Thank you all for your support and patients!

-Jim
